About Carl

I am a dedicated chess player and active member of the University of Reading Chess Society, where I hold the roles of Treasurer and Team Captain. As Treasurer, I manage the society’s budget, organise funding, and coordinate events to promote a thriving chess community on campus. As Captain, I lead the team during competitions, developing strategies and motivating members to perform at their best. My passion for chess goes beyond leadership—I am also a competitive player striving to win the University of Reading Chess Society Player of the Season award. This reflects my commitment to continual improvement, strong tactical skills, and a deep understanding of the game. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and helping others develop their chess skills, whether you’re a beginner wanting to learn the basics or an intermediate player looking to improve your strategy and competitive edge. With my experience both on and off the board, I can provide tailored lessons to boost your confidence and results in chess.

About the class

My chess lessons are designed to be fun, engaging, and tailored to your current skill level. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to sharpen your tournament skills, I focus on helping you understand key concepts like openings, tactics, strategy, and endgames. Each lesson is personalised to your goals, whether that’s learning the basics, improving your calculation, or developing a strong overall game plan. I break down complex ideas into simple, practical steps and provide exercises to reinforce your learning. I encourage questions and active participation to make sure you feel confident applying what you learn. Lessons can be flexible, with options for online or in-person sessions depending on your preference. Whether you want to play casually or compete seriously, I’m here to help you enjoy chess and improve step by step

Carl was an amazing tutor, always patient, clear, and easy to talk to. They helped me understand topics I’d struggled with for ages by breaking things down in a way that made sense. I could tell they really cared about my progress and always made time to explain things properly. They were reliable, organised, and made learning feel a lot less stressful.
