About Andrew

Currently pursuing a Master's degree at Imperial College London in Theoretical Physics, I am a friendly, enthusiastic and organised graduate from King's College London with a 1st Class degree in BSc Physics with Theoretical Physics. I have extensive experience tutoring and mentoring students from GCSE-level all the way to undergraduate. From my own experience as a student in Maths and Physics, I have developed the best learning process and experience to help my students excel and enjoy the subject, based on what helped (and didn't help) me. Taught subjects: I teach GCSE and A-Level Maths and Physics, and Physics and Maths (where relevant to Physics) undergraduate modules. Academic qualifications: MSc Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces - Imperial College London BSc Physics with Theoretical Physics - King's College London, 1st Class (Hons) A-Levels: Maths (A), Physics (B), Geography (A) Experience tutoring: At my secondary school, I assisted multiple subject teachers with the teaching of students in preparation for their GCSE exams, and provided tutoring on an individual basis for struggling students, for 2 years. Whilst at university, I became a mentor for younger undergraduate students within the Physics department, providing them with support in their academic and personal journeys through university. This involved offering tutoring sessions for students struggling on concepts within their modules.

With a friendly, encouraging and patient personality, and using techniques gained from my experience at GCSE, A-Level and degree level, I take a comprehensive and tailored approach to teaching - flexible on the student's specific level of confidence, goals and existing knowledge. In the first session, we will define what the final outcomes of the lessons will be, and the existing level of knowledge of the student. In the following lessons, we will take 4 broad steps and tailor these to best help the student's progress and learning experience: 1) Providing a comprehensive introduction to the subject: without a foundation on which to build the finer details of a topic, students can often be left confused and unsure how to tackle problems later on - or worse, follow robotic procedures without knowing if these are being applied correctly or the logic behind them. Hence, the first step in tackling a new topic is to provide a broader motivation and overarching background to the topic, in order to root the subsequent learning process and build the student's understanding behind the techniques and methods taken in the future. 2) Establishing the fundamentals: within each area of Maths and Physics, there are fundamental concepts to be understood before progressing to the more complex topics asked in exams. By establishing these basic rules and processes first, and linking them back to the motivation provided earlier, the student will be able to confidently apply the fundamentals of the topic in later stages when tackling more complex problems and techniques. 3) Tackling complex concepts: with the fundamentals and motivations for the topic established, the emergent phenomena of the subject can be tackled. First by deriving key results and techniques from the fundamental ("first principles"), a better insight into the why, how and consequences of techniques can be achieved. Secondly, this theoretical understanding of complex concepts is applied to physical scenarios and problems, in preparation for exam-style questions and lend physical context to the approaches taken. 4) Questions, questions, questions!: having studied physics and maths through GCSE, A-level and university levels, I know first-hand that learning how to follow a particular approach to solve problems, and solving real problems yourself are two very different levels of understanding. By tackling as many questions as possible, the concepts and understanding of the topic will be reinforced, as well as revealing any areas of confusion or weakness to work further on. The benefit of practising worked examples and exam-style questions cannot be emphasised enough, and will boost the student's ability and confidence with the subject. At any and all stages of the learning process, the student is encouraged to interrupt and ask questions no matter how simple, as asking questions is imperative to the learning process, and prevents doubts and errors at later stages. By using a two-way interactive whiteboard throughout my sessions, I am able to distil the concepts in a clear and visual manner, whilst allowing the student to better illustrate any questions, tackle problems with real-time feedback and support, and explain concepts back to me to ensure they are correctly understood ("The best way to fully understand a subject is to explain it to someone else").
