I am an honors student at the Florida State University with a double major in economics and statistics, and a completed math minor. As a tutor, I don’t always know all the answers off the top of my head, so I must consult my colleagues, my notes, or online resources, usually for complex application problems. I frequently have to answer fundamental questions or work with the students through these problems. But I’m also the one asking questions. It’s important to gauge students’ needs – some are happy to work independently and only ask a few questions, while others need me to do the problem with them step-by-step. Another common question I ask myself is, “Should I draw or graph this? Or should I walk them through the math? Or do they need both?” I often find myself providing advice beyond solving math problems – sometimes, students need to tweak their study habits or figure out the questions they should ask their professors. Along with positive reinforcement, this generates many return clients and referrals. I regularly run into clients when off the clock, leading to positive interactions. To me, it’s far more about being responsive than rigid in my role – that’s why I love my job and this field.
