About the class

Alicia Koczur-Shaw completed her pre-collegiate dance training from Triple Threat Dance Company of Wolcott, CT. Under the direction of Rob Merante, Jeffrey Pelletier, and Marianne Nuzzo-Rivadeneira, she studied tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, contemporary, and musical theater. In addition to her studio training, she worked as an assistant for Laurie Johnson at Tremaine Dance Convention as well as Courtney Ortiz, Allison Holker, Alex Wong, and Kathryn McCormack at Excel in Motion.

Alicia obtained her Bachelors in Fine Arts at the University of Central Oklahoma, where she trained in modern, jazz, ballet, musical theater, aerial silks, partnering, and hip hop technique classes, as well as, studied dance education classes including: Dance History, Music Fundamentals, Anatomy, Laban, Dance Composition, and Materials and Methods of Teaching. While attending UCO, she was a member of Kaleidoscope, their professional performance company. As a member of Kaleidoscope, Alicia trained with choreographers such as Bill Evans, Mike Esperanza, Jeremy Duvall, DIAVOLO, Noah Shiloh, and Christina Woodard, as well as faculty members, Tina Kambour, Hui Cha Poos, Kimberly Loveridge, Michelle Moeller, and Robyn Pasternak.

Alicia has performed nationally in various productions including: The Annie Oakley Society’s, Woman of the Year Award Ceremony (nominating Natalie Comaneci); The Ralph Ellison Awards Banquet; DIAVOLO! On Tour; NPD Projects, The National Water Dance Performance; SilverTree’s Productions’, Shake, Rattle and Roll!; The Tower Theater’s, Uptown, Get Down NEW YEARS EVE!; Kaleidoscope Dance Company Showcase NYC Tour, at The Joyce Theater. In addition, she has been featured in music and concept videos for both music artists and choreographers, including: background dancer for artist, ALANA'S, Moonlight; featured dancer for artist, Tess Collins', Shadowlands; background dancer for artist, TAILZ’s, Start A Riot; background dancer for artist, B R I’s, SCREENSHOT; featured dancer for choreographer, Fabiana Rendón’s original concept video, SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY; and featured dancer and assistant choreographer alongside Emmett Prince in their original concept video, WRONG.

Alicia has taught in multiple studios across Oklahoma County, hosting master classes in tap, jazz, and modern. She previously was on faculty at The Dance Department in Midwest City, OK, where she created specialized syllabi and taught techniques for students ranging from ages 5-40+ in tap, jazz, ballet, modern, lyrical, contemporary, musical theater, and dance conditioning. In addition to teaching technique, Alicia also choreographed pieces for their competition and recreational teams.

Now residing back in Connecticut, Alicia has worked on faculty at Triple Threat Dance Company in Wolcott, CT, Starr’s Studio of Dance in Kent, CT, Lisa Mennilli's Dance Academy in Newtown, CT, and DREAM, BELIEVE, ACHIEVE DANCE in New Hartford, CT. Alicia teaches tap, modern/contemporary, heels (both commercial/musical theater), jazz, ballet, and pre-pointe. This past competitive season, her Junior Company students received multiple ,overall scoring adjudications and were recognized for their ability to captivate the audience through their story-telling. Therefore, Alicia received the “Best Choreography Award” at both Applause Talent Competition and KAR for her contemporary piece, “End the Stigma”. In addition, Alicia’s contemporary solo piece, “One Beautiful Evening”, earned a judge’s choice award for “Best Choreography” and won multiple overall- high scoring placements as well as title winnings.

Alicia is competitive adjudicator who has worked on panel for 8NationalTalent's Houston, Texas events as well as DANCERSINC'S Boston, Massachusetts event. As of October 2023, Alicia has been selected to join Impact Dance Adjudicators' roster for the upcoming competitive season.

As an educator, Alicia delivers a curriculum that allows for her dancers to not only replicate proper technique, but gain awareness of the relationship between their inner and outer body connectivities through methods of movement analysis. By implementing the mind, body, and spirit connection coupled with elements of critical thinking, Alicia strives to live out her teaching philosophy, “The need for cultivating and maintaining a safe space where students feel free to explore movement and verbalize self discoveries is essential—not only for creating talented and confident dancers both in the classroom or on stage, but, open-hearted, knowledgeable, and PREPARED individuals that are ready to take on any future endeavors they wish to accomplish.”
