• When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  I have been tutoring design studio at a number of Universities for a while now. I found that most Architecture students get thrown in the deep end, having to develop many different skills at once. I am here to assist with this skills gap.

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  My main teaching experience is as an Architectural design studio tutor. Rather than a teacher, a tutor is more of a mental coach, or a manager of ideas. We guide students through projects, moulding the way they think and teaching them fundamental skills along the way. I enjoy teaching those fundamental skills, such as basic sketching skills, visualising space in 3D, and properly analysing Precedents.

• Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  Yes, my old undergraduate tutors inspired me with how patient they were with their teaching. They passed on their philosophies on the subject, which I still refer to today.

• What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  Patience, being articulate, and knowing how to motivate each student. Everyone is different, so you have to be personal with your students to use rest and their personalities and tendencies.

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  On the day of a review, we decided to work right up to the last minute. Unfortunately there was traffic on the way into uni, it poured down with heavy rain. Once I got in, the plotters broke down. We pitched up to the review 1 hour late and got a telling off by the tutors. Moral of the story: don't leave your work till the last minute, be better organised.

• What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

  A subject where the expectation is that students have to work around the clock to get a good mark. The challenge is to get students to work efficiently and keep a good balanced life.

• Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  I enjoy tutoring and talking through Architecture with students who are passionate about the subject.

• What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

  I am a friendly, considerate and passionate teacher that enjoys passing on my knowledge and experience to my students.
