We're going to start with sounds, because English doesn't always look the way it sounds. Then words, then sentences, and before long you'll be reading things you never thought you could read. You are going to make mistakes in this class. I want you to make mistakes — that's how I know what to teach you next. Nobody laughs at anybody here. If I go too fast, stop me. If you don't understand something, say so, and I'll say it another way. This isn't just about passing a test — it's about being able to talk to your neighbor, read a letter that comes in the mail, ask a question at work, and speak up for yourself. That's what we're here for. So let's begin."
