About Brian
I am available all days of the week to meet. Most importantly in these lessons, I want to make sure I am teaching you what YOU want to know, not everything that I know. I'm not the "show-off" type, though you can watch the video attached to see a display of my skill.
I first got started with guitar when I was 10. When I turned 11, I started to take guitar lessons with my teacher who was a professor at my city's community college. His name was Charles Carey, and I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for everything he taught me. He was a Jazz guitarist who taught me music theory, jazz standards (tunes), soloing, chord accompaniment, sight-reading, you name it. Most importantly, he gave me a love and appreciation for music that I've carried with me for more than half my life now. I know how important a teacher can be to their student. The impact my teacher has had on my life will always stick with me, not only with the skills he taught me but with the inspiration he gave me to pursue my dreams of being a musician for a living.
Charles gave me the tools to learn any song by either sheet music or by ear. With this, I learned a lot of punk music in middle school, but by the time I was in high school, I branched out and began learning music in all sorts of different genres, including indie rock, reggae/ska, progressive rock, alternative, and funk. All the while I was the lead guitarist in my high school's jazz band, played in my Baptist's church band, and made money playing guitar in a funk/rnb cover band. I now play guitar in 2 local indie rock bands, of which I am a primary songwriter. Of course, if you are interested in my background and have any questions then we can talk more about this over in messages.

What I’m here to do as a teacher is help you reach your goals. In our first lesson, we will go into detail about what you are interested in learning. From there, we'll set some goals that you want to see yourself achieve. If you already have your goals set and determined ahead of time, that's even better. Message me with what you are looking to learn or get better at, and I will make sure I have a routine ready to go by our first lesson.
For the beginners out there who are looking to learn the basics of how to play guitar, whether you first picked one up yesterday or a month ago, I have a lesson plan designed for you that will teach you everything you need to know, including how to teach yourself. I have a practiced and applied regimen to start anyone at any age, that will have you learning chords, melody, and music theory in no time. In the first month of lessons, I like to focus on technique, as it is important for beginners to not be discouraged by strained wrists or sore fingers. Learning the proper techniques for how to hold, strum, and pick a guitar is crucial to the beginner enjoying their time spent on the instrument. This focus encourages practice and leads to long-term results, I can assure you that you won't only take a few lessons with me. I will have you hooked on guitar!
If you want to take a 1-hour long lesson with me per week, for beginners I'd spend the first 30 minutes going over exercises to practice on your own, and for the last half hour, I would teach you new music through reading. This could be anything from a one-note exercise for beginners or a chord-melody transposition for the more advanced. I like to dedicate half the lesson time to melody and lead guitar, and the other half to chords and rhythm guitar. I find it important to learn both even if you have a preference! I also offer 2 half-hour lessons a week in which the time would be divided the same way. One lesson to focus on exercises, another lesson to focus on new music.
Some genres I am especially well versed in include: rock, indie rock, reggae/ska, progressive rock, funk, emo, punk, and alternative. I especially love 90's and 2000's music!

Brian’s enthusiasm for guitar really makes me want to practice. I tried learning the instrument on my own, but couldn’t find the motivation to stick to it. Taking lessons with Brian gives me the push I need to play at home consistently.
Brian started teaching me acoustic guitar 7 months ago and I'm so happy with the progress we've made! A family friend told me Brian was starting to teach guitar, and since I had been looking for an excuse to take lessons, I reached out. I could only play a few chords before our first lesson, but now I can play songs that I love on the guitar. Recently Brian taught me "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White T's. I definitely recommend him to anyone looking to learn guitar. He's friendly, easy to talk to, and I couldn't have gotten this far without him!
I’ve played multiple gigs with Brian in the past and he’s always been extremely professional. From my experience with him I can see how dedicated to music he is. He would always come to shows prepared. Brian is a very versatile musician and can learn any song necessary. He has an amazing attitude towards music and life and brings positive energy to every show. I am sure Brian is a fantastic teacher and I could not recommend him enough!
