About Cheryl
As a tutor with a Master’s degree in Business Administration and over five years of hands-on experience teaching English Language at both the university and elementary levels, I bring a unique combination of academic expertise, professionalism, and adaptability to every session. I’ve had the privilege of tutoring 2nd and 3rd year university students in English Language focusing on academic writing, comprehension, and presentation skill as well as guiding elementary students in building strong literacy foundations. What students and parents can count on is consistency, preparedness, and a respectful, encouraging learning environment. I tailor each lesson to suit the student’s level, goals, and learning style whether that means preparing a university student for a research paper or helping a younger learner develop reading fluency and confidence. My approach is professional but approachable. I set clear expectations, use proven teaching strategies, and track progress to ensure every student feels supported and sees measurable growth. I also bring strong communication skills and a real-world perspective, thanks to my strong educational background, which helps students not only learn English but understand how to use it effectively in academic and real-life settings. Above all, I want students to feel safe, heard, and motivated. My goal is to help them believe in their abilities and to guide them toward long-term success in language and learning.

Teaching Method and Techniques: My teaching style blends support and interactive learning. For university-level English Language students, I emphasize critical thinking, academic writing, reading comprehension, and oral fluency, using real-world texts, academic sources, and business communication scenarios to make lessons relevant and practical. With elementary students, I use visual aids, phonics games, storytelling, and foundational grammar and math drills to keep sessions both educational and fun. I also incorporate formative assessments, such as quick recaps, reflection questions, and short quizzes, to gauge progress and adapt lessons accordingly. For all learners, I strive to create a supportive learning environment where my students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and growing. A Typical Lesson Plan – Elementary English (Grades 3–6) Topic: Building Vocabulary through Context Clues Duration: 60 minutes Objective: Students will learn how to use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words in a paragraph. Structure: • Warm-Up (10 min): Quick game: “Guess the word” using simple sentence clues. Example: “The enormous elephant couldn’t fit through the gate. What do you think enormous means?” • Mini Lesson (10 min): Introduce 4 types of context clues: definition, synonym, antonym, inference. Use anchor chart or board. • Guided Practice (15 min): Read a short paragraph together. Highlight unfamiliar words and identify clues around them to define meaning. • Independent Practice (15 min): Students complete a worksheet where they read short sentences/passages and select the meaning of bolded words based on context. • Review & Sharing (5 min): Volunteers share one word they figured out and how. • Wrap-Up (5 min): Recap types of context clues and assign a short take-home activity: find 3 new words in a book and guess their meaning using context. A Typical Lesson Plan – High School English (Grades 7–9) Topic: Crafting a Strong Hypothesis Statement Duration: 60 minutes Objective: Students will understand the components of a strong theory statement and practice writing one for an argumentative essay. Structure: • Warm-Up (5 min): Ask: “What makes a statement an argument?” Show examples of weak vs. strong thesis statements on the board. • Mini Lesson (10 min): Define thesis statement, explain key components: specific, arguable, and preview of main points. Example: “Social media has a negative impact on teen mental health because it promotes unrealistic standards, reduces face-to-face interaction, and increases anxiety.” • Group Practice (15 min): Students work in pairs to revise weak thesis examples provided by the tutor. • Independent Practice (20 min): Students choose from a list of topics or bring one from class. They draft a thesis statement and write 3 supporting points. • Peer Review (5 min) when in a group setting: Exchange and critique a partner’s thesis using a checklist. • Wrap-Up (5 min): Volunteers share final thesis statements. Provide final feedback and optional extension: write an intro paragraph for homework. For elementary students, their lessons are more segmented and activity-based, with frequent changes in task type to maintain focus and engagement. What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor: What distinguishes me is my range of experience and my ability to relate language instruction to real-world use, especially in academic and business contexts. My MBA background allows me to bring in an added dimension of professional communication skills, which is especially useful for students preparing for global careers. I also build strong rapport with students, fostering confidence and motivation, which I believe is critical for language acquisition. Who the Lessons Are For: My tutoring services catered to: • Elementary students needing support in English Language and Math fundamentals, including ESL learners. I customize each lesson based on the learner’s current proficiency, goals for e.g exam prep, academic improvement, fluency etc., and preferred learning style. • High School students in their 2nd or 3rd year, particularly those studying English Language, Business English, or preparing for academic writing and presentations. My current focus is tutoring Elementary and Junior High students in English and Math because the need is so dire. Ultimately my goal is to empower learners not only to succeed academically but to become confident, independent thinkers and great communicators.
