About Barbara
In terms of qualification and teaching range, I am an Oxford graduate, having studied English Language and Literature. However, I am a native Spanish speaker with a family from Venezuela, and have National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications in Spanish. This makes me equipped to cover both GCSE and A Level Spanish (having taken training courses and familiarised myself with the syllabus, which is fairly similar). My lessons are for all ages up to about 17-18. I am a warm, friendly and engaging tutor, my main goal within lessons being making my students as comfortable as possible. The reasons I often give for wanting to teach include that I want to share my passion for the things I am talking about. Having a family from South America but living in the UK means that I often feel disconnected from my culture; teaching and sharing my native language helps me feel more connected to it than anything else. I find that teaching a language is like teaching culture, and I think that it can often be a lovely display of cultural exchange, which I do not often get to share so far away from my family.

My teaching is highly collaborative, and individual teaching plans are developed based on the needs of the student. A lesson could range from 45 minutes - 1 hr and 30 mins depending on the student. In terms of Spanish, I would spend a long time developing the student's comfort with the language, by immersing them in speaking as much as possible. Depending on the student, this would include a mixture of speaking, writing, listening and reading, each session covering at least two of these skills. To give an example, if a student had really good vocabulary and grammar, but expressed fear or anxiety when actually speaking the language, the lesson would be structured around working towards making them really comfortable. For example, we would begin by translating short sentences from English into Spanish. From here, we would identify problem spots and go through any new vocabulary or problem areas in grammar. To finish the sentence, we would spend 5-10 minutes engaging in a short conversation. This would mean that the student had spent 30-50 minutes engaging with the language before they were asked to speak it, acting as a sort of 'warm up'.
