About Abbie
As a student at the University of Manchester I have achieved awards such as the Shakespeare Prize for performing exceptionally in my cohort. I have also taken central focus on ecocritical studies and postcolonial literature, having written my dissertation on Annie Proulx’s ‘Barkskins’. Through teaching, most of all I want to share my passion for literature, but I also want to break down the barriers that make English feel inaccessible to a lot of students. Exams can often feel like memory tests and I want to emphasise that this is not the point of literature— yes, we will work on all the necessary skills to pass the exams (with flying colours!) but this is always best done when stories and poems are thought of expressively rather than with repetition and monotony.

My lessons are largely informal because I want my students to feel at ease rather than under pressure in their learning. Lessons are typically around an hour, with a short break in the middle. In the past I have run thirty minute sessions and I believe this is a good focus period, and my students have worked best when offered this break. For this reason I also offer thirty minute sessions for students who just want that confidence boost when talking and thinking about their English work. My experience is mostly at GCSE level but I also work with A level students studying English Literature and Comparative Literature.
