I am a graduate of Cambridge University with a 2:1 in English and over six years' worth of experience as a tutor. A keen linguist, I also took modules in Latin and Spanish as part of my degree. My subjects, among others, include English, Maths, Latin, Spanish, Drama and Creative Writing. In addition to general support from pre-GCSE to degree level, I have supported a number of my students for Common Entrance, 7+, 8+, 11+, 13+, GCSE, AS Level and A Level. I have also guided them in their preparations to enter into further study, including in exam practice, interview practice and personal statements.
I first began tutoring in sixth form as part of a voluntary school programme, whereby more academically-proficient students would provide extra-curricular support to other students struggling in a number of subjects. This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience which confirmed my suspicion that careful and attentive instruction can cultivate proficiency in anyone.
I always tailor my lessons to suit the needs and learning style of each student — often making use of fun visual aids (both digital and non-digital) and a very useful system of memory techniques called 'mnemonics'. My other pastimes include after-dinner speaking, and writing and performing comedy for the stage, television and radio. As a result, many of my pupils have professed to enjoy my use of comic, absurd or dramatic examples as a means of reinvigorating potentially dry topics.
I never lecture. My philosophy has always been to engage my pupils, having them play an active role in their learning and instructing them, in as entertaining a manner as possible, towards critical and independent thought.
