About George
Canadian cellist George Crotty has forged his own exciting vocabulary, pushing the boundaries of the cello as a jazz instrument. Following his graduation from the Berklee College of Music, Crotty immersed himself in New York’s jazz and world music scenes, playing with several ensembles, such as the Brooklyn Raga Massive, and the Detroit-based National Arab Orchestra. Additionally, he has enjoyed fruitful collaborations with Simon Shaheen, Paquito D’Rivera, Anat Cohen, and Darol Anger. The George Crotty Trio’s Chronotope (2022) showcases the world-jazz outfit’s expressive fluidity and modal orientation. Their cross-cultural interplay draws on modal jazz, Indian raga, and Arabic maqam. One half of the Loose Roots Duo with West Coast fiddler Gabriel Dubreuil, the Canadian cellist also performs in a unique solo setting that explores his Irish and Jewish heritage. Crotty has performed at Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Koerner Hall, Savannah Music Festival, Globalfest, Newport Folk Festival and the Vancouver Jazz Festival. He was invited to play at the prestigious New Directions Cello Festival and has toured internationally playing Bogotá, São Paulo, Berlin, and Paris. Crotty toured North America with 10-time Tony-winning Broadway musical, “The Band’s Visit,” and played on the video game soundtrack for “Assassin’s Creed Mirage.”

George is an extraordinary cello teacher who brings a collaborative and creative approach that is tailored to me. His wide knowledge base is gently delivered in careful, analytic and supportive feedback. I strongly recommend him to anyone who is interested in being inspired by music and gaining technique to bring that inspiration to life.
George is a very vulnerable guy. If you've ever heard of the saying, "Vulnerability starts with you," George will meet that level of vulnerability that you give him. This is a super helpful trait in someone with whom you're sharing your artistic voice from the heart. Safe space for sure.

Inspiring teacher. I struggled with low confidence and imposter syndrome before starting lessons with George. I wasn't "wearing" my cellist. Classical music was boring. I gained a willingness to put myself out there and increased confidence.I'm an adult beginner interested in improvisation and music beyond classical, and George provided exactly what I needed - guidance, support, encouragement and wonderful opportunities to develop my musicality. I believe George would be an excellent teacher for any level and genre.
My only regret about having George teach my son was that we didn't start with him early enough. My son was languishing with a more traditional (ie heavily structured) teaching method, and while that had worked very well for him initially, he was bored and was no longer responding. However, with George, my son became engaged and enjoyed his lessons. As a very young boy, my son had always loved creating his own music, but that had been extinguished by the sheer volume of exercises and time required to perfect advanced technique. With George, my son re-learned to enjoy music again. George has a wide enough knowledge base about various styles of music to introduce to students so they are likely to find something that appeals to them.
Of note, we drove one hour to have in-person lessons.
Better than virtual. And my son had been playing classical cello for a decade when we started with George so he already had some advanced technical skills. Lessons focused on more modern techniques like chopping as well as expansion of modern repertoire and improv.View more recommendations
