My foundational experience as a professor has been working with students who may not excel academically but have the heart of a nurse. The academic part can be learned, but a caring heart is a nursing requirement. My teaching basis focuses on experiential learning and using case studies and actual nursing critical thinking to make decisions like a nurse. NCLEX exam is focused on the nuance between potential decisions and this nurse thinking is an area where many good students struggle.
