About Ralph

My name is Ralph and I have been tutoring mathematics for over 6 years. I have a First-Class Master's Degree in maths from Durham University and now tutor consistently part-time. I have tutored students at all ability levels, from year 7 through to undergraduate - where I was employed by Durham to conduct calculus tutorials for groups of 12-16 students. Over the years I have refined my teaching methods and consolidated them with teacher training from the university. I have particular success helping students with GCSE/iGCSE and A-level/IB preparation, as you will see in my extensive list of testimonials. For more information, please get in touch for a free lesson/consultation.

Practice is the key to success when learning mathematics and so the structure of my lessons is catered towards this. At the beginning of a lesson, I will introduce a topic in a clear and concise manner and then guide the tutee through problems for the remaining majority - with the aim of them being able to complete them independently. What a lot of people fail to grasp in maths is the importance of having a solid foundation in the basics: it is impossible to fully understand new topics when you have not already mastered their predecessors. It's analogous to trying to play a football game without knowing how to pass a ball. In my sessions, we will identify any weak links that may be present and bring them up to par with the rest of your mathematical knowledge; helping you to become a more well-rounded mathematician so that you can excel in your exams.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

From a very early age it was clear to me that maths was one of my favourite subjects. I appreciated that maths was a lot more about 'doing' than simply acquiring knowledge. Even thinking back to when I was in primary school, I remember there being an immense sense of satisfaction when solving a maths problem - something that stays with me to this day! I began to officially privately tutor when I was only 16; I say officially because I think I had always enjoyed discussing and explaining different ways to solve a problem with my peers - learning about how different people think about things.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I tutor maths from the level of 11+ all the way through to undergradutate level - where I ran group calculus tutorials for first year math students at Durham! I love absolutely all areas of maths, but perhaps my favourite one to teach students is calculus; it is one of the first points that a student gets to see the true power of how maths can be applied in real life. Topics that I dislike are few and far between, in terms of teaching I cannot choose anything! But an area of maths that I am less fond of is number theory.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Those in the tutoring sphere understand that it is all about giving back to the system that helped develop you. For me, there have been a few teachers over the years whose passion for a subject outshone the rest, and I really felt as though their primary objective was to help me understand as much as possible. Aware of this, I strive to hold myself to this standard and to be like those teachers who did so much for me throughout my time as a student.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Especially in maths, I believe the two most important tutoring qualities are empathy and open-mindedness. One of the benefits of starting my tutoring journey at such a young age, is that there have been numerous points where the student I am tutoring is only a year younger than myself, sometimes even the same age! This always gave me the advantage of being able to empathise completely with why a student might be struggling with a topic, as I likely struggled in a similar way too! This has always helped me resonate with students and is something I take into all of my sessions. The latter quality is particularly important when tutoring maths and it must be exercised when a student starts to solve a problem in a way that might be different to your own! I always say the best way to solve a problem is whichever way you can come up with yourself (at least for learning purposes…) and so it's important to give a student the freedom to explore these possibilities.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember when I was in year 8 my first maths lesson started with my teacher asking us a simple question about the cost of an apple if you knew the cost of 5 of them.. which was easy I thought. Then immediately he told us about how much 5 oranges and 3 pears cost, and then 2 oranges and 6 pears - and asked us how we would work out the answer. At the time I had absolutely no idea! It seemed like the simple problem he had started with shouldn't be much different to the second one he had given us, but because of the way I was thinking about the former - it helped nil with the latter! It taught me a lot about realising you have to look at problems in different ways.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I think at some point everyone finds a roadblock in their learning journey where all of a sudden things get difficult. For me, this didn't really happen until I went to university and started learning real analysis… For those who are unacquainted, I would probably say consider yourself lucky! But this was a completely new way of thinking about maths and took me considerable time and effort to understand; all the more satisfying when you do, though.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I would say I have a passion for learning in general, and I don't just mean academic pursuits. I love to learn new skills or tricks - a notable mention is that I can do a standing backflip! Currently I am learning to speak Italian (un po', communque).
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I have been tutoring now for 6+ years and have tutored people at every skill level from year 7 to undergraduate, as well as taking my own mathematics to an extremely high level achieving a First Class masters degree in the field from Durham University. I am extremely passionate about my subject and learning in general and I believe I do an excellent job in letting other people share this passion.
