About Riya

I'm Riya, a recent graduate with a First Class degree in Economics from the University of York. Maths has been the backbone of everything I've studied. My degree modules were heavily quantitative, including econometrics and statistical analysis, so I've spent years applying the same principles students meet at GCSE to real problems.

I achieved a Grade 9 in GCSE Maths, an A* in the Free Standing Maths Qualification (the bridge between GCSE and A level), and an A in A level Maths. Alongside my own studies, I spent two years tutoring GCSE Maths at school, working with students across a range of abilities. That experience taught me how differently people approach the same problem, and how to explain a topic several ways until one lands.

I currently work in finance, where numbers are part of my daily routine. I tutor because I enjoy the moment a student stops dreading a topic and starts feeling capable, that shift matters far more to me than any single grade. I'm reliable, well organised, and I take the responsibility of preparing someone for their exams seriously.

About the class

My lessons are for students working towards GCSE Maths, as well as those at Key Stage 3 and below who want to build stronger foundations before exam years.

I graduated with a First Class degree in Economics from the University of York, so numbers have been central to my own studies for a long time. That said, I know Maths only clicks when it stops feeling abstract, so I focus on making each topic make sense rather than asking students to memorise methods.

A typical lesson runs for one hour. I usually start by checking what was covered since we last spoke, then work through the topic together with worked examples, before handing over problems for the student to attempt while I guide them. I use plenty of past paper questions closer to exams, and I break down mark schemes so students understand exactly what examiners are looking for.

Every student learns differently, so I adapt pace and explanation style to suit. If something isn't landing, we try another approach until it does. I'm patient, encouraging, and happy to revisit topics as often as needed, confidence matters just as much as content.
