About Luke

I’m Luke, and I am especially interested in the singer who has been given lots of advice but does not know which advice applies to their voice. Maybe one person told you to push from your diaphragm, another told you to sing forward, somebody else told you to open more, and now you are thinking about six instructions every time a high note approaches. I would rather reduce that confusion than add another slogan to it.

My approach is experimental. We make a small change, listen to what happens, and keep it only if it improves the result. If changing the vowel makes the note easier, that tells us something. If singing it more quietly suddenly removes the tension, that tells us something else. If an exercise feels wonderful but completely disappears when you return to the song, then we have not finished the exercise yet—we need to build the bridge from the exercise into the actual music.

This can be a particularly good fit if you are a singer who thinks, “I know I have a voice in there, because sometimes it comes out exactly the way I want—but I can’t make it happen consistently.” That inconsistency is something we can study. The goal is for your best notes to stop feeling accidental and start feeling repeatable.

If your voice feels good until you reach that one area where everything changes—your throat tightens, the vowel spreads, you push more air, and the note either cracks or comes out much louder than you wanted—that transition is where I would want to start. Instead of assuming you need to become stronger, we will look at what your voice is doing immediately before the difficult note. Often, the high note is not where the problem begins. The setup happens one or two notes earlier. We will slow down that transition and experiment with how the vowel, airflow, volume, and shape of the phrase affect the result. The singing profiles in the reference material repeatedly emphasize breath, range, vocal-tract awareness, reducing unnecessary muscular involvement, and adapting technique to the individual voice.

One method I like is two-pass song work. On the first pass, we temporarily remove some of the performance pressure. A difficult lyric may be sung on a simpler vowel or a lighter sound so that we can find the physical coordination without fighting the word. On the second pass, we restore the lyric while trying to keep the easier sensation. If the tension returns, we now know exactly what changed. That gives us something concrete to adjust instead of repeating “support more” or “open your mouth” without knowing whether either instruction actually helps you.

Breathing will also be connected to the song rather than practiced only as an abstract exercise. We can create a breath budget for a phrase: where does the phrase actually require energy, where can you use less air, and where are you spending too much too early? Some singers take a very large breath and then immediately fight against it. Others wait until the final few words before realizing they have nothing left. We will experiment until you can feel what an efficient breath is for your particular phrase. Then we use that same coordination in another song so it becomes a transferable skill.

Interpretation comes after the voice has enough freedom to make choices. We can take one line and sing it three ways: intimate, conversational, and more intense. Then we examine what actually changed—volume, consonants, tone, timing, or resonance. The goal is not merely to “add emotion.” It is to give you controllable tools for creating different colors without sacrificing the coordination we just built. The reference material similarly combines technique work with repertoire, interpretation, performance practice, and goal review.
