About Evie

I love maths, which is a necessary quality for a dedicated and motivated maths tutor! I have participated in many online courses, and UKMT competitions throughout my academic career, which evidences my passion for the subject. I also completed an EPQ about the desirability of rigour in mathematics, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I understand that maths currently has a bad reputation in schools and I think this should change. In the future I aim to work as a teacher or lecturer in mathematics. My maths degree at Warwick has been very interesting and rewarding since I started it in September 2023.

I usually teach any content my student is struggling with then work through exam questions alongside them. My lessons are typically one hour but I can be flexible. I achieved ten 9s in my GCSEs (including mathematics). I then went on to achieve A* for both mathematics and further mathematics (as well as physics and chemistry). As well as having a strong mathematical background, I can offer tips on exam preparation and technique. I tutored one of my peers in GCSE maths and another in A-level maths while I was at school, then started tutoring through both superprof and hunarly. Since working with these companies I have taught many different students from the age of 8 to 18. Before each session, please let me know what topic you would like to look at together so I can make the most of our time together

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have been interested in maths since primary school as it was my best subject. I started to really love it as I gained more knowledge and solved more problems. I love discovering answers as I am inquisitive. As someone at the top of my maths class, I was constantly helping my peers. I provided free tutoring to a few of my friends before I decided I would start private lessons.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I am happy to discuss all the mathematics I know with students but I am very aware that that wouldn't be the best thing to do and I will always cover what is on their syllabus so I don't overwhelm my students. My favourite topics I have taught so far have been probability and proof by induction. I am not a fan of statistics!
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

There are so many amazing mathematicians that have inspired me such as Ramanujan, Hardy, Hawking and Germain. My teacher in year 5 encouraged my passion for maths significantly. There was also a teacher at my secondary school involved with UKMT challenges who helped me to engage in maths outside of the curriculum. Both of my A-level further maths teachers were very helpful and showed how fun maths can be.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor should focus on the students' needs rather than their own. They should be patient and willing to try explaining something in a few different ways. They should encourage the student to ask questions as this is the best way to understand a concept. They should provide material to check understanding rather than firing information at the student constantly.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember always finishing my maths work early and constantly asking for more challenging questions.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

It can be harder for me to motivate myself to persevere if I keep getting something wrong but I just remind myself that if I don't try I'll never succeed. Also, none of my peers shared my passion so I didn't have many people to discuss it with, which is why I love tutoring!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love learning about mathematics and I find that teaching really solidifies my own understanding. Although, I have always wanted to be a teacher anyway and tutoring is good practice for this.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I am a Superprof because I reply quickly. Also, I teach starting as simply as possible with the basics to make sure the student doesn't have any gaps in their knowledge before building up to the harder content. I encourage my students to ask questions as soon as they don't understand something because otherwise, it would be a waste of both of our time!
