My name is Thomas Jenkins and I am a self-taught fiddler, violinist, electric violinist (6 and 7 string), mandolinist, guitarist, vocalist, and at one point in my life I was pursuing a degree in French horn, but ended up dropping music school to tour.
Playing my first professional gig at 15 years old, I have lived and breathed music for 30 years, with 20 years of professional performance experience in 46 states with major acts like Sammy Kershaw, Whitey Morgan and the 78's, and over a dozen different artists and bands on the Greater Gulf Coast.
Being able to put musical instrument learning in terms that people understand is my mission and brings me joy. My goal each lesson is for the student to have at least one "light bulb" moment.
I have worked with age ranges from 7-70+. I don't believe in things like age limits for learning musical instruments. If you've ever been told you're "too old to learn an instrument" or that you "started too late to be any good", you're in the right place. They don't know what they are talking about.
I started teaching fellow band students in high school. In college I taught middle school horn and now one of those students is a band director. I have taught at private lesson studios, and most recently was teaching veterans and first responders as a volunteer effort.
I have taken a limited amount of violin lessons. Among those who gave me lessons were legendary fiddlers Aubrey Haynie and Buddy Spicher. The bigger part of my training is the 30,000+ hours I have put in on just that instrument then another 20,000 hours or so split between 5 other instruments.
I went through college on a French horn performance scholarship and won awards and opportunities on that instrument as well. I have experience in symphonies and youth symphonies on horn and violin, so I can teach music reading and the like, but ear playing and improvisation is my area of specialization.

I like to have a conversation, find out what your interests or strong academic subjects might be, and figure out how to use that information to approach how I present information to you on musical learning.
I've worked with children, adults, senior citizens, veterans and first responders. I will teach anyone with a desire to learn, regardless of background and whatnot.
Lessons shouldn't be nerve wracking--
Don't feel like you have to study with the kind of teacher that slaps your hand with a ruler every time you make a mistake in order to become good. Mistakes are definitely allowed, and so is experimenting with the instrument, playing things that aren't assigned..
Practice quantity yields playing quality.
