About JoAnna
I've been teaching violin and fiddle since I graduated from the Juilliard School in 2007. I wanted to create a music studio where students of all ages can explore their creativity, reach their goals, and express themselves using the amazing power of music. Most importantly, I wanted to make sure that music (especially violin, fiddle, and composition study) helps students grow as individuals, while also contributing to the wider community. I believe that every person is musical, and through art we can lead happier, more creative lives together.
Lessons are always personalized for every student. I emphasize excellent technique and the pursuit of high goals, while also making sure that lesson progress is interesting and exciting. A spirit of collaboration and mutual support is very important in my studio, and students frequently work together in chamber groups, group projects, competitions, and Field Trips. (Upcoming trips include: the Met Opera, a Harry Potter live orchestral concert, a performance by a world-renowned tabla percussionist, and many others.) We have monthly "Works in Progress" Playing Classes, where students practice performing for one another in a relaxed environment, enabling them to learn valuable public speaking, audition, and performance skills.
Joined by my husband, Darryl Kubian (of Indigo Fox Media,) Farrer Music Studio now also offer Composition, music theory and ear training, Music Production, and Studio Recording lessons. Our Studio mixes traditional music-learning techniques (Suzuki, Sevcik, Galamian method, learning by ear) and 21st century technology - students have access to hundreds of recordings (video and audio) to practice with at home, personalized DropBox folders for quick access to assignments, and recordings of their lessons each week.
With traditional recitals, "Student Hero" Practice competitions, improvisation and sight-reading challenges, masterclasses with world-famous artists, CD and DVD recording projects, and so much more, studying music in our Studio is definitely a thrilling journey. Darryl and I aim to help every student explore and express their musical voice, and we look forward to working with you.
I love seeing my students build the creative skills they need to express themselves, building self-confidence as they succeed at higher and higher levels. For me, teaching and sharing with others is one of the most fulfilling parts of being a professional musician.
I received both my M.M. and B.M. from the Juilliard School, in Violin, as a student of Glenn Dicterow, the former concertmaster of the NY Philharmonic. I worked for many years (beginning when I was 6 years old) in regular lessons with Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman, and attended the Perlman Music Program and numerous high-level chamber music summer programs with Mr. Zukerman, both in the U.S. and abroad. After completing my Masters at Juilliard, I was the assistant teacher to Ms. Patinka Kopec, the Co-Director and Co-Teacher of the Pinchas Zukerman Performanc Program at Manhattan School of Music, and have been teaching privately since then. I am highly trained in the Galamian school of violin instruction and performance, and have taught violin and fiddle, coached chamber music, and taught composition, audition preparation, and perfomance skills all around the world.

First, I like to find out what each student's musical background is, and what their goals and dreams are in music. With that in mind, I craft their first assignments, making sure that there are very clear markers to reach. For my violin and fiddle students, I make sure to provide audio and video clips that they can work with at home, and have many other tools for practice help between lessons. As we progress together, assignments become more and more challenging, incorporating technology and performance into each stage of their work.
