About Melissa
I am a performer first. This means that my focus is on creating the best possible sound and technique on the trombone. I have dedicated a great deal of time understanding how to master this instrument. This gives me a great understanding of how the instrument works and how to solve the many problems that arise when playing this instrument. These insights allow me to offer students creative solutions to the problems they are facing in their playing.
One of the things that I love about teaching is seeing the progression of a student, how they slowly gain confidence in their skills as they learn how to make music.
About me: Received my Bachelor of Music degree from New York University in 2019. Received my Masters of Music at Carnegie Mellon University in 2021. Have worked as a freelance musician playing in orchestras, musical theater pits, opera pits and chamber music.
Teaching Experience: one year as the Carnegie Mellon University Music Extension School Trombone Instructor, two years as the CMU trombone studio teaching assistant and two years coaching the NYU Philharmonia trombone section.

For my first lesson with a student I like to start by talking about what they would like to learn, what experience they have with the trombone and/or music in general. After this discussion I go through my warm ups with the student. I then have them play something for me (only if they already know how to play). If it is an in person lesson I like to end my lessons playing duets.
If the student is a beginner to the trombone or music in general I go through a different plan. Starting with learning how to read music. Then learning how to buzz and what the positions are finally learning how to play.
With all of my students I give them a listening list for them to listen to over time, we will talk about what they listen to in each of our lessons.
