About Cameron
Cameron Kerl is a professional trombonist and educator based in Houston, TX. Following his move to the area in 2016, he has performed with a variety of notable ensembles, including the Houston Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony, Spokane Symphony, New World Symphony, and Houston Jazz Orchestra. In May 2020, Cameron was engaged as principal trombonist with Loop38, a Houston-based contemporary ensemble that specializes in presenting works by living composers. In 2018, he received his Masters in Music from Rice University, which was preceded by his Bachelor of Music from Northwestern University in 2016.
Cameron's education, performance and teaching experience make him a valuable resource for students of all ages and levels.
Teaching is one of the most important parts of being a professional musician. Every trombonist has a sound that is unique to them, and helping each student discover and develop that sound is a very rewarding and enjoyable process for me. I always find that I learn more and more about my own playing as a result, too.
When I first moved to Houston to pursue my Master's degree in 2016, I was quickly engaged as the trombone instructor at several public schools in the area. From this, I was able to cultivate a studio of 25-30 students, which also involved teaching group masterclasses and coaching the local youth symphony low brass section.
I received both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in trombone performance, which provided me with 6 years of intensive training with world-class musicians. In addition, I have gathered extensive "hands-on" training, performing professionally with ensembles such as the Houston Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony, and New World Symphony.

With each new student, I begin by personally assessing prior experience, current skill level, and future goals. I am able to tailor my lesson approach to each individual, whether my students' musical aspirations are personal, school-related, or professional.
At least for the first few lessons, I like to prioritize trombone fundamentals, including breathing, tone production, articulation, basic flexibility, and slide technique.
My students have primarily been in the middle school to high school range, which has included early beginners as well as advanced students preparing to pursue music in college.
Not all student-teacher pairings are the perfect fit. However, it often takes a few lessons for each party to get to know each other and determine if they can achieve the student's musical goals together. My advice is to be patient and understand that progress does not look the same for every trombone student - you may have many quick breakthroughs, or you may see improvement more gradually.
