About Franco

My students learn to sing without unwanted tension. There are no mysteries; just the way our bodies can work in seamless coordination. The body is the instrument, imagination the player, but the body needs to respond to the mind's concepts of tone and phrasing accurately. That's where building a better instrument is important and where I come in.

With undergraduate study at The Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, graduate study at The Juilliard School, 50 years on professional stages from Lincoln Center with Leonard Bernstein to to Broadway to the Circus Maximus at Caesar's, Atlantic City and so many venues in between, I bring performance experience and a lifetime of study of how we work as instruments to the studio.

The "aha!" moments when students feel how easy it can all be.

Singing is so intimately entwined with self-esteem, joy of expression, senses of accomplishment. Lives change in many more ways than vocal when singing is understood.

MY APPROACH TO SINGING

Humans are born to sing; our voices are primarily melodic instruments. If you'd like to play an instrument, you find one already built and stressed to withstand its various functions and study how to play it. When you pick up a clarinet you can see it, feel it, learn to play it. What does your voice look like, feel like? The study of singing becomes a journey of self-discovery as we gain awareness of what we see and feel like as melodic instruments. I have spent my adult life discovering and understanding exercises which make the sensations of our voices and natural singing inevitable. That is what I teach. Our voices are physical instruments, governed by laws of nature and played by the mind. That's why I call my studio: Mind Your Voice! Through proper physical training and self-awareness, the music you sing can be a matter of your choice rather than the limit of your ability.

While I have taught students in small numbers when my performing schedule permitted during the past 45 years, I now have all but retired from the stage. I dedicate myself fully to helping others understand the wonders of the human voice that I have discovered over a 50 year career. In aid of that purpose I have written a short text on the sensations of healthy singing and the mind/body connection entitled: THINK FEEL SING.

One review of the book reads:

"Spoto's love of the art of singing shines through in this gem of a book. Mr. Spoto has written clearly and persuasively, an important text on the art of singing. With warmth and humor he explains and demystifies the technical building blocks that form the base needed to help a singer find his or her unique voice. The mind and body connection in singing is deftly explored, as are aspects of breathing and support. After 30+ years as a professional singer, this book has helped me re-examine my vocal technique. Included are some of the best exercises I've come across. I highly recommend it to anyone who wishes to take singing to the next level."

About my teaching, one former student wrote:

"Good teachers care about their students, but Franco, a coach's coach, is passionate about helping them achieve their goals."

I began teaching singing, music theory and conducting at Bluffton University in Ohio right after my graduation from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Then, between singing engagements, I have always taught one or two students until I retired from the stage in 2014 when I began to develop a full-time vocal studio. I still accept engagaments but am focused on helping young singers find their voices and other singrers regain them.

It varies depending on abilities already present. Key elements of singing begin with easy breathing and go on to technical aspects of releasing the sounds appropriate to the music always with balance in mind.

Operatic, jazz, musical theater, church, pop, rock and folk. The type of music is less important than learning what your voice looks and feels like.

Consider that you are investing in your future; not buying a commodity.

Not so recent, but my grandmother was in a nursing home near the end while I was on tour with Sammy Cahn in Toronto for a couple of weeks. I was asked to sing the Canadian anthem at a televised playoff hockey game. Nurses wheeled a TV into her room, woke her and she got to see her grandson on Canadian TV...worth more than any monetary fee.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are my goals, dreams, ambitions?
