My bio:

A classically-trained saxophonist, Max Schwimmer brings a sense of musical adventure to performance and music education. His chamber music and solo projects span Western classical works, new music, klezmer, tango, the American songbook, and beyond. He has performed through the US as well as internationally Italy and Ukraine.

In the summer of 2019, Max presented concerts with Ukrainian organist Elena Udras in Chernivisty and Khmelnitsky, Ukraine. He currently performs with the Foundry Quartet, including educational concerts for Hartford Performs in Hartford public schools. He has also played with the Juilliard Orchestra under Marin Alsop at Carnegie Hall, as well the U.S. Coast Guard Band and Philadelphia's International Opera Theater.

As a founding member of the Asylum Quartet, he received praise for “nonstop virtuoso skills” (Times Herald-Record) and “evocative, educational and refreshing concerts” (Newport Daily News). With the quartet, he appeared at the Boston Athenaeum, the Newport Music Festival, and the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, and was featured on WNPR’s Where We Live and in Psychology Today. Asylum received the Grand Prize in the 2014 International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition in Boston, and collaborated with composers including Lev “Ljova” Zhurbin, Erberk Eryilmaz, and Polina Nazaykinskaya.

Max has worked with over 2,500 students in one-on-one saxophone lessons, educational workshops, and outreach concerts. He has taught saxophone at Manchester Community College, Music and Arts East Hartford, South Windsor High School, and Camp Encore/Coda in Maine. In the 2018, he led the Instrumental Music program during the inaugural season of the URJ 6 Points Creative Arts Academy in Pennsylvania.

Max’s arrangements for saxophone ensembles include works by Charles Ives, Philip Glass, Beethoven, Debussy, Franck, Gershwin, Piazzolla, Zorn, Imogen Heap, Ljova, Louis Thomas Hardin ("Moondog") and others.

Max holds a Master's of Music from The Hartt School at the University of Hartford where he studied with Carrie Koffman. He completed a Bachelor of Music from Arizona State University's Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts School of Music as a student of Dr. Timothy McAllister.

I love helping students discover the fun and self-fulfilment of learning an instrument. I enjoy getting to know my students and supporting them as they learn and grow.

I have been teaching since college. I've been lucky to have some inspirational teachers who have had a huge impact on my life, and I always knew I wanted to be a part of that tradition!

For beginners, the first lesson is about learning proper setup and posture while holding the instrument, learning how to make a sound, and trying a short, simple song. Developing solid fundamentals and practice skills in the first lessons are key to long-term success.

For more experienced students, I usually start by hearing the student play something they know well. From there, I can quickly identify any opportunities for technical development. I like to learn about the student's musical journey and their goals for repertoire and performance opportunities. Then we can develop lesson goals together, which I use to help provide practice assignments and develop a long-term practice plan.

All ages and abilities! I have worked with a lot of middle school, high school, and adult students.

I believe it's really important to work with an experienced specialist on your instrument. There are lots of teachers who teach multiple instruments, and while they may be great musicians and teachers, they will not be able to set you up for success and maximize your development. An expert on your instrument will help you develop strong fundamentals, quickly diagnose problem areas, and provide a strong pedagogical approach with a deep understanding of the history and tradition of your instrument that a generalist simply can't offer.
