My service allows an athlete to enter a safe space where they can open up and think for themselves as they self reflect and collaborate with me on how to tackle different issues by being taught mental skills that can be used in their respective sports and in real life.
This job allows me to stay in the realm of sports. Basketball has always been a passion of mine, for I've been coaching for about 5 years now at local high schools in my area, at the YMCA and club. Though, I didn't just want to extend my help to only basketball players, but to any athlete out there who needs it. I am here to break the stigmas that hold an athlete down from reaching their full potential, as I make it my duty to help an athlete in any way I can.
At first I wanted to be a Physical Therapist, but I took my first psychology class on childhood development and I got hooked. Thus, I started coaching high school basketball as soon as I got out of college back in the fall of 2017. I always advocated the importance of mental health and tried to be the best mentor and coach I could. From then, I started taking classes and eventually worked my way up to achieving my Master's degree, which led me to working with two sports psychlogists to create blogs about different topics of athletic mental health, my own journey, and finally leading me to bringing my own skills in mentoring through my current high school basketball team and the mighty mite team I have worked with recently.
I have a Masters in Sports Psychology from California Southern University. I have worked with high school girl's basketball players from Mount Miguel High School and the Poway Mighty Mite football team ranging from ages 8-9 years old. I have experience playing college basketball for 4 years at a NCAA D3 school, the University of Dallas. I have volunteered as a coach starting in high school with the Comets girl's club team randing from middle school age to high school. Officially, I have been coaching girl's high school basketball for 5 years (at Olympian and currently Mount Miguel) and have worked at the YMCA as a basketball refereee and coach. In high school I played basketball, volleyball and ran track.

My typical process begins with speaking to parents or coaches first before getting permission to approach an athlete. Then, I communicate with the athlete individually in order to get a feel for what they would like to work on, and then create a personalized program that meets their specific needs. I will collaborate with the athlete to determine their short and long term goals, and make these goals achieveable so that we have a good and steady progression through the program. Then, every skill we will spend the amount of time needed (could be a couple weeks, could be one) depending on how well the athlete understands the mental skill and applies it to their game.
I have worked with student athletes randing from 8 years old to 17 years old.
Always have a pre-meeting with the person first. Professionals in this field have a wide range of philosophies and ways of teaching that may benefit one student but may not be a good fit for another. If you don't feel comfortable with one teacher, seek out another. We are all happy to help and lead you in the right direction.
I recently worked with a mighty mite team and the whole season we practiced breathing exercises before practice. Although we only focused on one skill, this one skill helped increase their focus during practice, focus their energy into competing not worrying about making mistakes while on the field, helped ground individuals who had a hard time paying attention, and promoted relaxation.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I believe that students don't always have to have questions for me right at the beginning. Depending on their personality or willing to open up, I want the student to come to their own conclusions about their needs, and not feel pressured to know exactly what they need help with. I am here to guide them through their thoughts and collaborate to come with a viable solution to their specific needs. If a student already has a handle on what they would like to work on, they are more than welcome to formulate any questions before meeting me.

Nerissa was fantastic! She assisted me in coaching my son's 8-9 year tackle football team. She quickly gained the trust of the players and parents by implementing a breathing ritual for the kids during practice and games. It was a great tool to use throughout the season when players had to deal with anxiety and any challenging situation. In addition, I loved that I could count on Nerissa to help with a child that was dealing with their emotions on the field. While she spent the necessary one-on-one time with them, working on their mental skills, I could attend to the other 19 players. Nerissa is fantastic, I would hire her time and time again!
