About Cynthia
I have been teaching and playing music in Seattle for over 20 years. I have a classical background and teach Classical, Jazz, Blues and Latin piano. It's important to me that students develop a strong musical confidence through understanding music theory, ear training, reading and a sense of accomplishment. I tailor lessons to suit a student's passions while keeping track of their progress so they develop the skills necessary to fulfill their musical goals. My youngest student is 6 and my oldest is 69.
It's my intention as a teacher to encourage joy playing music, with the happy byproduct of becoming a good piano player. Many of my former students have gone on to study music at conservatories, becoming professional musicians and teachers themselves.
I began teaching initially to subsidize my playing career. It was the best way to keep my energy and time for my own practice and gigs. Then I discovered I really enjoyed teaching and chose to focus on that. I enjoy watching others grow as musicians, and the ongoing relationships I have with current and former students is very gratifying.
Although I have a bachelor's degree in music, I never stop studying piano. I learned how to improvise and became a professional jazz pianist in the middle of life. I have studied jazz with local teachers and also taken lessons and workshops with Kenny Werner, Barry Harris and Mark Levine, to name a few. I wanted to learn how to play Cuban music so went to Cuba and studied popular Cuban music and Classical music with Cesar Pedroso and Andres Alen. As often as I can I travel to NYC to study with Seymour Bernstein. I gigged for 12 years and am writing a book about playing music, which will have an accompanying cd.

It is helpful for me to find out what goals the student has -- for adults or students who have studied with another teacher prior to me, I like to know what they worked on, what they like to play, what they like to listen to, and also what they didn't like. I ask them about practice, then explain my process to them -- I ask them to keep a notebook -- which becomes a lesson planner and also a means of tracking progress. I determine what level they are playing, and let them know that it might take a little bit of time for me to learn their learning style and them to learn my teaching style so I encourage open communication from the start. With kids, I want them to immediately feel a sense of fun and accomplishment and I do that through the resources I use and stickers and awards for achieving goals.
I work with Classical musicians as well as those who want to learn how to play jazz and blues. I work with composers, who want to learn more about theory and learn more about their craft. I work with people who can't read music and people who only know how to read music. My job is to expand horizons.
Interview prospective teachers and choose one that you feel understands and relates to what you want to accomplish. Don't just go for the most famous name! Sometimes the most well-known artist is more focused on their own career and is only teaching so they can make extra cash in between gigs. Nothing wrong with that, and it works for some. But if you know what you want to do musically, look for the person who you feel will care enough about your progress to help you achieve your goals. Someone who will work as a mentor. With looking for a student for a child, you want to look for a well-rounded person. If your kid wants to play only classical piano, then by all means go for the best teacher in that area you can find. If you want your kid to have background where they can grow in any genre, learn classical and improvise too, then find a teacher who can do those things.
Recently a former student returned home to visit his family. He put together a group of players from his former high school -- a trumpet player who recently graduated from Juilliard, a sax player who studies at Manhattan School of Music, a drummer from Berklee and another drummer from USC. He had just graduated from New England Conservatory. These musicians were twenty-one years old or younger, and consummate musicians! Few people were in attendance which was a shame because it was one of the most inspiring musical performances I've ever seen.

I prefer to share my pricing details with students when we meet, and not on a public forum. I can say I'm not the cheapest teacher, nor am I the most expensive. I am understanding about the busyness of life these days, so am as flexible as I can be. Generally, on the first of the month we predetermine how many lessons there will be for the month and I ask for payment at that time. If I travel, I must add a $10 traveling fee per lesson.
Adults often have busier schedules. Some of my adult students come every week, but most have lessons every other week, and there are some who I see whenever they can schedule. With kids college age and younger, I recommend a weekly lesson. It's been my experience that once a student reaches 7th grade, 45 minute lessons are best, and sometimes at that time they move to an hour lesson. For 8th grade and older, hour lessons are generally optimal.
