About Priscilla
I have taught music since 1991. I focus on helping my students to discover their own style and voice in their singing, playing, and songwriting.
For the past several years I have been working internationally (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), and only recently had to return to Minnesota due to social and political issues, so I am rebuilding my private music teaching practice.
My strength is in teaching. I have struggled with knowing and understanding my voice. I have been singing and harmonizing since before I could talk, but didn't have anyone to teach me really how to work with the range and depth that my voice had. But I'm an analytical learner, so I just started to experiment and try things, evaluating them along the way.
This is what I enjoy about teaching. It's the process of helping the student to understand their voice or instrument and take control of their ability to create music and art. It is invigorating to me when students "get it" and have that breakthrough that finally helps them to reach the next level of their creativity.
I began teaching in 1991 when I was a junior in high school. In our very small private school, there was no music program, but I had completed all my course work, so they put me to work directing the school choir.
Soon after I began teaching private lessons locally, and began leading worship and directing bands. This blossomed out to what it is today.
1. Associate of Arts [Anoka-Ramsey Community College] - Music Education.
2. Bachelor of Arts [UMD-Duluth] - Vocal Performance (with considerable side-work in Jazz Studies, Music Composition, and Linguistics).
3. Graduate Work [McNally Smith College of Music] - Contemporary Vocal Performance & Hip Hop Studies.
4. Doctor of Worship Studies [Liberty University] - currently in this program.

I start each (voice) student (except for the very young) by giving an overview of how the voice works, and then getting right into the singing. I provide immediate feedback and advice on how to improve tone and breath support immediately.
We then start working on songs. My preferred way is to study an artist that the student is inspired by. We use great artists to help teach the student through a method I call "artist studies."
For songwriting, theory, and keyboard, we learn by doing. We do first and analyze later so that the same thing can be done in different ways and with ease. I'm an analytical learner and also an artist, so I combine both in my teaching.
I have worked with all ages, from 3-76 years old. I've worked with tone-deaf students, and have developed an excellent process to train the ear. I also work with ear training for those who want to learn to sing harmony.
I've taught both private lessons and classrooms. I've taught in a formal setting from elementary students through university, and have taught songwriting and other music classes in continuing education classes through Saint Paul Public Schools, and other local arts and community learning organizations.
I've done clinics and master classes in both the high school and college levels. I've also taught those with cognitive and developmental challenges such as Asburgers, Autism, and ADHD.
And I've now developed my ability to teach remotely as the need arises, though I find in-person lessons are far more productive when possible.
Choose someone with the maximum life experience. It's tempting to go to someone who you like to listen to, and that's good, but that should not be your first objective when looking for a teacher. I have found that some of the most enjoyable or talented musicians are some of the worst teachers, and this is particularly true the younger they are.
Instead, find a teacher who has faced the challenges artistically, and has overcome them. The teacher who continues to teach and thrive in the industry after a decade or more of teaching . . . they are someone who is committed and who is truly a teacher.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Are you willing to do the work? Music lessons are not a "quick fix." I work to ensure that my students are making maximum progress in minimum time, but this is a process. It's like learning a new sport and a new language all at once. It will take time and commitment.

Perfect! Priscilla is extremely knowledgeable and is a master at her craft. As a singer with 15+ years of training, I needed help with range and physical issues while singing. At my first lesson, I was already hitting notes I thought I had lost. She focuses on healthful singing, while also fostering the artistry of each song. Knowing that repetition is everything, and getting back the technical practices will take time, I look forward to every lesson.

Positive energyPerfect! Priscilla is good at making the piano make sense. She understands music theory and does a great job preparing a person to create what they want to hear, not just what is written.

I am in my mid thirties with little to no music experience, so finding the right teacher who wouldn’t just try and teach me as they would a kid was important. Priscilla adapted her teaching style and worked with me to figure out what I wanted to learn and helped me understand what I would need to do to get there. Would highly recommend any adult beginners to work with Priscilla!
Priscilla puts a lot of emphasis on the emotional and artistic expression side of singing, and this is something I love about our lessons. Many other instructors will focus on the technical and skills aspect of singing, which usually come with time anyways. She keeps us on task during lessons and makes the most of our time, 100% recommend and will refer people to her if they are looking for lessons.
She is excellent at getting you to understand your voice and all it can do. I came in with a strict choral background, and she brought me out of my shell wonderfully! She taught me how to utilize a stronger chest voice, while guiding me on how to sing emotionally and expressively. She is also so much fun!! If you are looking to have fun with your voice while learning so much about what it can do, I strongly suggest Priscilla!
Priscilla Stilwell is very nice and can create any atmosphere with lots of enthusiasm. Not only does she create a fun space to learn, all her lessons are enormously in details when working with her. For example, she would overload you with lots of content to learn at first, but then later take time for you to understand something you don’t get, which you don’t see a lot compared to other instructors. That style of teaching has a way of making all her lessons unique, which I really enjoy being apart of. To those extent, she goes above and beyond to make you understand the content and connects what you learned, so that you can apply it. Like mentioned briefly, she is willing to go with your own pace when learning new content. Whether you are a fast learner or slower pace, she is very adaptable in those aspects. For those multiple great reasons, it is a big plus as an instructor.
Besides that, Priscilla has lots of energy to give and she is very fun to work with. I’ve also learned a lot after multiple lessons from her, whether how to play the piano or music theory. Not only mentioning the great qualities she has as her student, she has many more that I have not yet mentioned above.
Overall, I would 100% recommend her as an instructor for others that are looking to grow/ start their skills as an artists. Learning from her made it possible for me to enjoy and have fun with something I struggled before. In my opinion, I think she is the best quality instructor I’ve been with!Priscilla works well with my 8 yr old. She keeps her engage, which can be a challenge virtually. My daughter looks forward to her lesson each week and has a great time.
I've studied and played music with Priscilla for quite a few years. She doesn't waste time and doesn't sugarcoat what she has to say. She addresses the issue and works with the student to find a solution.
Priscilla also has a very eclectic music style and is comfortable playing and teaching everything from classical to pop and even hip-hop. So if you want to really grow as an artist, I can't recommend her enough!Priscilla ways very fun to work with on the worship team. I didn’t have any experience with performance apart from choir so this was a great way to grow in confidence on the stage. She really helped me to polish my skill in harmonizing, and was very patient in doing so. Would definitely work with her again and would encourage others to as well :)
She is a VERY hard working individual, she knows how to make anyone she teaches successful in Music as well as in life she is a very good mentor to her studies as well as a teacher, very knowledgeable in Music Composition, Piano, Vocals, Praise and Worship, she knows how to connect with anyone who comes into to contact with her. She is very detailed, goal oriented, when you give her a deadline she will get the job done before the deadline and her work is top quality as well as her knowledge.
Priscilla is a great understanding teacher songwriter and musician.
