About Cortney
I am a published poet, constant writer, and avid dreamer. When I was in college, workshopping a new poem, script, or piece of literature by either me or my classmates was always the highlight of my day. I believe sharing and workshopping is integral to the creation of a writer. It helps you learn the convoluted ins and outs of the English language and slowly, you find your voice as a writer.
It's scary to write from the innermost part of you, and it's scarier still to share it with someone else and have it edited; but I believe that process and that bravery is what really refines a recreational writer into a published, successful author, playwright, or poet. I've been involved in the process for about 10 years and it never gets old. I love participating in the process and watching a draft become a masterpiece.
I was always the friend that proofread other people's essays and poems. When I was in college, I started applying the things I learned from workshopping and regularly worked with a student in my church's youth group edit and evolve his poetry pieces, slowly helping him find his voice as a poet. I was hooked!
Bachelors degree in Journalism with a minor in Creative Writing.
Published in Z Publishing’s “Best Emerging Poets in New York” and “Best Emerging Poets in America”
Winner of the Nancy P. Scnader award in 2016 through the Academy of American Poets.

We'll have a conversation about those edits, how they make the work stronger, and where to incorporate the edits into the piece.
Finally, we'll compare the draft(s) and the finished product and mark the improvements!

You need someone who will dream with you and what you're trying to convey, but someone who will help you develop a better sense of the English language and how it works together to make great writing.
