About Siri
The common belief about the oboe is that it's the hardest instrument to play, and because of that most people are scared to try (except for you! Bravo!) Does it have challenges? Of course! Can these challenges be overcome? Absolutely! How do I know? I've been through all of them and then some. Bad reeds, college rejections, failed auditions, running low on self-confidence, you name it.
However, I've been through major successes: earning degrees from top music schools, becoming a self sufficient reed maker and performing successful solo recitals and orchestral concerts in great halls around the country. This took hard work, perserverance, creativity, and most importantly, people by my side that understood every peak and valley of the journey.
My mission as your teacher is to be that person for you.As my student, you will learn more than just how to play the oboe and the fundamentals of music. I want you to have a healthy relationship with your music and your progress on the oboe so you can confidently tackle problems that come your way.
I believe that being a musician is about so much more than reading notes on a page.It's about your journey towards becoming a creative problem solver, independent thinker and collaborative partner. It's about flexing your creativity, practicing with mindfulness and overcoming rejection with a positive spirit. Because being a musician is about being a better person!
I received my Master of Music in Oboe Performance at the University of Southern California, and my Bachelor of Music in Oboe Performance at New England Conservatory of Music. My former teachers include David Weiss, Mark McEwen and Basil Reeve.
Based in Southern California, I maintain a thriving private studio and am on faculty at Concordia University Irvine. In my role as Professor of Oboe I have served as a woodwind ensemble coach and run the university's annual Double Reed Day. The event focuses on introducing oboe & bassoon players of all ages to the reed making process and showcasing local double reed vendors and resources. With over 13 years of experience, I am also a professional reed maker, selling my signature Bloom Oboe Reed (an homage to my maiden name) nationally through Midwest Musical Imports.
As an orchestral musician, I have appeared on oboe and English horn with the Dana Point Symphony, Whittier Regional Symphony, Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra, and the inaugural Piatigorsky International Cello Festival Orchestra where I collaborated with members of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. I have played under the baton of many celebrated conductors including Hugh Wolff, Helmuth Rilling, Mei-Ann Chen and Carl St. Clair.

As your teacher, I am committed to meeting you where you're at and building you up as a strong oboist, musician, and person. In our lessons, we will use method books, etudes and solo pieces to focus on the fundamentals of oboe playing and elements of a musical foundation. Lessons will also focus heavily on practice techniques to give you the best tools to learn any piece of music!
I have worked with students of all ages and skill levels, from the beginning junior high player to retirees that play music as their hobby. I'm excited to teach anyone who wants to learn the oboe!
