About David
If your parents are pushing you into this whole tutoring thing, and you end up getting stuck with me, guess what? You won this one. You are about to have more fun with thoughts, words and the playground in which they live than you ever thought you would!
My focus is exclusively on inspiring students to develop uninhibited, flowing creative writing skills. You'll find no "theory" here. This is real-world wordsmithing from beginning to end. From text messages and emails, to essays, ads, scripts and more, "the blank page" will become your best friend. You will learn words, love words, and know how, when and where to use them.
I have over 10 years of tutoring experience, 20 years of writing creative copy, including hundreds of pieces of ad copy and content for over 5,000 web pages.
When not busy tutoring, I am the national sales director for a cookie company in Los Angeles, where I live with my girlfriend of four years, and her 2 teenage sons. I have a son who's a freshman in college and another son heading into high school this coming fall.
Some random factoids about me? I have written, produced and/or directed 4 independent feature films (one of which has a trailer on YouTube with nearly 6 million views, another which won Best Feature at the Long Island International Film Festival), 12 webisodes on blip.tv, and the foreword to a book. My kids and I have logged over 30,000 miles road tripping across 40 US states.
Favorite quote: It always seems impossible until it's done. - Nelson Mandela
Favorite book: Steal Like an Artist - Autin Kleon
Favorite show: The West Wing
Favorite film: I was never able to answer this question but I can have a detailed discussion about it, so feel free to ask.
Some students already have a passion for writing. Others are living on the edge, occasionally finding something about writing or reading, enjoyable. There are also those students who think they either don't like writing, or have simply had less than stellar experiences with writing "assignments". What I am head-over-heels in love with when it comes to all students and writing, is the next step. There is always a step in one direction or another that will open a door to a place only moments ago, they didn't know existed. It's a place where a word or a carefully layered array of words, makes something happen. My passion comes from the journey with a student to a place where they realize words have energy. That's a special place.
I met someone who was tutoring and she thought I would love it. She was right. From day one, I was hooked and never looked back.
I have tutored over 600 students over ten years. My wide variety of practical creative writing experience comes through in every one of my lessons.

The fantastic thing about working with a new student is the getting-to-know-each-other is part of the work, and part of the work is the getting-to-know-each-other part. I our initial hour, which will fly by, there will be no notes, no syllabus, no list of books, assignments or "what you'll need" suplpies list. Working with a new student is a slow migration from my doing all the talking to what will inevitably become a fast-paced banter as we develop our own working rhythym.
I have tutored students ages 8+. I do not only focus on tutoring children. I love working with young adults trying to up their game in college, and adults of all ages who want to develop writing skills or just kick start their way out of a temporary writers block.
Listen. Then engage. When it comes to creative writing, getting the most out of your work with someone is going to be about your ability to bounce things off one another. Creativity needs space. It needs energy. You will know in the first ten minutes if you are in sync with your tutor.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
You have to be honest with yourself. You have to want to go somewhere. Your tutor is there because they love the journey. You have to want to be part of that because it's your journey on which they are going. So you have to first consider where you would like your journey to go, and why.
