About Maggie
When I first started studying in college, I began teaching several pre-college (ages 6-18) students and college-aged elective harp students through the university. I quickly grew to love teaching and working with my students, growing a reputation as a teacher that brought in more and more students over the years. When I was able, I began also teaching lessons independently from my home, and I haven't stopped since!
I have three degrees from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, widely considered to be one of the best music schools in the world. I have a Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and a Performer Diploma, all in Harp Performance, with a cognate in instrumental conducting. While at IU, I also served as an Associate Instructor in the Harp Department and completed an internship at the Lyon & Healy harp factory in Chicago.

I like to meet with potential new students so we can learn a bit about each other. We discuss the particulars of learning and playing the harp, as well as what draws the student to the harp and what they'd like to get from their lessons. I also introduce the student to the harp, as many have not previously had the opportunity to see one up close. I work to tailor their lessons and music to what they enjoy and are interested in playing, rather than giving all students the same materials and experiences.
I have taught music lessons to all types of students, ages 5 to 85, beginner to advanced, ranging from those who didn't even know what music looks like to those who studied music in college but were looking to learn a new instrument. My students' goals with the harp have varied from hoping to someday pursue music as a career to simply wanting a hobby they can enjoy in their retirement. Many of my students wish only to play for themselves or their churches on occasion, while others look to learn theory and technique in-depth with plans for performance or composition in the future.
No matter what your goals are for learning the harp, it's very important to learn to play correctly. Proper hand position and technique is vital, not only for ease of playing and the best sound, but to prevent hand and wrist injuries in the future. For that reason, I highly recommend finding a teacher with professional training and background.
I've taught many students that came to me from other teachers or were previously self-taught. They often tell me that playing the harp hurts their hands or they feel like they haven't progressed in a long time. As soon as I begin to work with them on their technique, the pain vanishes almost immediately and they're playing more advanced and more fun music right away.
In the spring of 2018, I was asked to be the guest teacher and adjudicator for an event hosted by the Georgia chapter of the American Harp Society. I got to spend 2 weekends listening to students of other harp teachers - a variety of ages and levels - from all across the state. It was a joy to listen to so many students that I had not previously met, offer them my advice and suggestions, and see how they took that input and improved before returning for the 2nd weekend.
I regularly serve as guest instructor for two different week-long retreats for harp students of various levels each summer. One week is primarily adult students and the other was primarily teen through college-age students, but both are a week of intensive study of the harp where we all live and work together every day. While the weeks could not be more different, both are so enjoyable and fulfilling for me as a teacher. It's fantastic to work with students I have just met - as well as a few of my own students - and see how they grow in their skills and knowledge of the harp.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
One of the biggest obstacles that stops many people from pursuing harp lessons is the need for a harp at home for practicing. Harps can be quite expensive and are a big commitment for what can sometimes be an unknown. Luckily, there are a LOT of options for students to have a harp at home for practice, from renting to rent-to-own to purchasing new or used. I'm happy to speak with you about all of the possibilities and what option might be best for you!
