About Brian
My teaching approach: My approach differs from student to student since I cater to the precise needs of each individual. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and I will work with each student on both. My influences are: I'm mainly a jazz player, so I find more influences through non-guitarist like: Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and the list goes on and on. My guitar lessons take place in: The teacher's studio. Guitar Techniques: Scales and Exercises, Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Performance, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following: I ask them about their experience and what they already know. It's surprising how even "beginners" know quite a bit before they even start playing. If they have experience, then I ask them to play something or we can play something together. I'll ask what they do and don't know and then make a plan from there. A guitar lesson with me might entail the following: I start by reviewing what happened last week. Based upon how well the student performs the material will point us in a newer direction. Sometimes information needs to be presented in several different ways before it truly clicks. The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following: I can teach anyone willing to learn, who will practice, and shows interest in music.

I got started teaching directly out of high school. I began teaching for a local store in Stillwater, Oklahoma and then I moved to Minneapolis to study luthierie. After Minneapolis, I apprenticed a luthier in Austin, TX before returning to Oklahoma to study at the University of Central Oklahoma.
I began teaching for the University of Central Oklahoma Community Music School upon my arrival. I taught ages from 5 all the way to 65 while at the community music school. Since then, I accepted a teaching position at Oklahoma City University, where I serve as the Adjunct Instructor of Jazz Guitar. My students are primarily classical guitarists, and we spend our time on fretboard knowledge and applying concepts from theory class to the instrument.
I received my Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance from University of Central Oklahoma, and a Masters in Music from Oklahoma City University. I currently serve as the Adjunct Professor of Jazz Guitar at Oklahoma City University.

New students are met at their current level, which can begin anywhere from discussing the tuning of the instrument and names of the strings, or upward to jamming over a basic chord progression. You will be met at your skill level and a plan will be developed together to help you reach your goals on the instrument.
I've taught students ranging from 5 years old all the way through retirement ages across a variety of skill levels from the complete beginner to advanced college level students.
