About my style:
If you are looking for someone to rap your knuckles, its not me! While I expect the best from you, I don't seek to punish you for being nervous or not having the time during the week to practice. I encourage my students and work with positive reinforcement to build good habits to build the skills you need to play and perform! For younger students I create social and personal achievement incentives, and for each student I work with you to build our Literature so that we are playing what YOU WANT but also learning what skills YOU NEED! I also recognize that while fundamentals are imperative, challenging yourself can keep things from getting boring. We will tread the balance and keep you improving week by week.
A little about me:
I graduated from Xavier University with a Degree in Acting. While there I also studied Music Theory, Singing, Piano, Guitar, Drums, English, and Philosophy beyond required credits. My emphasis was on performance, but my studies in Philosophy and English Language and Literature have informed every aspect of my teaching.
The unique element of my instruction comes from the intersectionality of my education. There is a storytelling framework that underlies all of the performing arts and it is ingrained in us on a psychological and physiological level!
I most enjoy passing the musician's craft on to other people. There is a beauty in music that it takes a learned ear to hear. It is also one of the only pursuits that has become more interesting to me the more I knew about it. It is a language unto itself, and it can be as complicated as organic chemistry or as simple as a nice rhythm.
I started coaching before teaching actually. My father was a skilled athlete and taught me baseball and football from very young. Some of my first teaching memories (7/8 yrs old) are teaching my cousins the lessons in sports that my father taught me.
Later on, around 15 years old, I participated in a tutoring program at my local high school to help middle schoolers with English skills.
In college, I used to help my friends who had a harder time with acting. We would run lines, analyze scripts, and practice songs.
After college, several of my relatives and friends had children they wanted to expose to the arts, and asked if I could help.

Once I have observed your skill level, we will work together to build a list of material to work on.
Once we know what we will be working on, HOW to do it is crucial. If you are someone who wants and needs structure, I will build as much structure as you need and help keep you accountable, including recordings, journals, and exercises. If you would like a more relaxed style, you can bring in what you would like to work on and I will give notes and suggestions.
I have currently students ranging from 8 to 65. My only requirement is that the student express the interest themselves. I can work with short attention spans and burgeoning coordination, but I only want students who have truly chosen to learn.
Don't stay with a teacher you aren't happy with, especially if you don't feel you are making progress with your skills. You can be uncomfortable in lessons and still make progress, but ultimately it will be a hindrance. Find an instructor you can stand as a person who offers the knowledge you need in a way you can understand it. It takes time and patience to find the right one for you. Don't give up!
My mother loves the Pirates of the Carribean movies, so I taught her the haunting organ theme played by Davy Jones. Seeing her sweet face hunched over the piano playing this dark ballad tears me to pieces.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think students should always talk to their instructors about what they need, or what isn't working. Sometimes, I might advise more patience than is comfortable or I might not be able to answer more personal questions. Most importantly, I see my students as people, not paychecks. I would rather build a rapport that turns into friendship or true mentorship rather than be a dry and closed off instructor.
