About Isabel
Hi! I'm Isabel, 25. I have studied French since 2005 and have lived in France intermittently for the last two years.
With e-learning becoming more and more of a possibility for the 2020-2021 school year, I want to offer my tutoring services so you or your student will have individualized support (and encouragement!) while learning the beautiful albeit challenging French language.
As a language learner myself, I cannot stress enough how important regular exposure to your target language can be. It was not until I was fully immersed in a French-speaking community that I felt 100% confident in my language skills, so my goal is to get you or your student speaking as much as possible from Day 1.
Even if we only meet once, I hope you walk away from our session with a new-found enthusiasm for learning French, as well as some tools and strategies that I have found to be really helpful!
I love working one-on-one with students and watching their confidence grow. Foreign languages can be tough but they are SO rewarding once you realize how a whole other world can be opened to you with a simple “bonjour.”
I like to begin by identifying my student’s learning goals and learning style before developing our tutoring plan. I keep lessons moving, with plenty of energy and conversation. After all, it is my personal belief that French should be FUN and challenging, not dull and overwhelming. And as a non-native speaker, I can share your frustrations with things the French take for granted, like the subjonctif and “WHY say four-twenty-ten instead of ninety?!” But I promise, we will get through it together!
I hold an Illinois teaching license and am certified to teach grades 6-12 in English and French. I student taught in Downers Grove, IL and have spent the last three years teaching English in in Europe: one year in Slovakia as a Fulbright Scholar and two years in France as an English teacher.
For specialized help, I have tutored in my university's Writing Center and independently since 2013-4.

First, we IDENTIFY your purpose for French tutoring. Do you want:
- Help with a middle, high school or college-level French class?
- Some French conversation?
- To learn French as a hobby?
- Some essential phrases before traveling?
Next, we REVIEW how you like to learn. Do you prefer a tutor who will correct every little mistake? Or a tutor who is more laidback? Do you like learning with texts, audio or visual aides? Are there some things your past teachers' have done that you just CAN'T work with? Let's talk it out!
We also have to ASSESS where you currently are with your French abilities. We might chat a little bit, look at some previous assignments, or I might ask you to read a short text so I can get a general idea of your level. Don't be embarrassed! Believe me, if you make a mistake, odds are I have made that same mistake dozens of times before.
Finally, we ESTABLISH our learning goal(s) and develop a timeframe in which to achieve them. We can determine how much time you are available to devote to French every week, and figure out how we can best use our time together to have you speaking français with confidence.
