About Samuel

I provide online virtual tutoring in a variety of subjects, and my passion for teaching and helping students learn is one of my greatest joys! I am not simply interested in helping students grasp ideas and theory related to their educational needs, I go above and beyond to connect with them relationally, so they can experience an encouraging environment and acheive their own goals.

Teaching and helping students learn brings me a deep sense of joy and fulfillment. Knowing that the work I do helps a student to grasp ideas more fully is the main idea; however, I know from personal experince that education is foundational to becoming a more whole and healthy human being. I see each student as both a learner of information, who I am tasked to help, and as a human being with passions, desires and goals of their own that I want to inspire!

I have always loved learning, and as a result one of the best ways to learn more is to be a teacher.  My love of reading, learning, and understanding numerous subjects has afforded me the opportunity to be a great coach, teacher and tutor to students of all ages.

Teaching, Tutoring and Coaching are all ways that I find deep fulfillment as I help students and athletes to thrive and acheie their goals.

I have a Masters Degree from Princeton, and my undergraduate degree was in Education from Seattle Pacific University.  I have spent the past two and half years working as part of an after school program.  During that time I have spent significant hours coaching sports, teaching elective courses, and tutoring students with homework in a variety of subjects.

My first step in working with a new student is to assess needs, abilities and goals.  The first session is key for this.  I will ask what the student needs the most help with and ask questions to clarify their already present abilities in the area(s) of need.  Next, I will ask them to specify their concrete goals.  Once I have a handle on the needs, abiilties and goals of the student, we will lay out a plan which includes what sessions will look like, as well as, how many sessions we will need to complete in order to acheive their goals and see improvement.

I have worked with young elementary age all the way up through high school and college students.

I have coached various sports at multiple age levels.  I have also officiated various sports and overseen the practice and training of different sports for various ages.

I have worked with students and athletes from various cultural and religious backgrounds.  My number one concern is that each of these individuals experiences growth in their area of need, and that they sense themselves closer to their goals.

I think it is of utmost importance that students find a tutor/teacher who has a plan.  Once assessment has been completed, they ought to expect a tutor/teacher to lay out a measurable and testable plan to show the fruit of their work.

I also think that the tutor/teacher ought to show a genuine interest in the student's growth as a person.  Students should seek tutors/teachers who want to help them develop character and work ethic through challenging lessons and regular encouragement.

I was recently coaching a student on the fundamentals of basketball, more specifically how to shoot a basketball effectively.  After only a few minutes of coaching and teaching on technique, the student made a shot from a further distance then they had ever done before!  I saw the joy in their face, and their passion for the game increased greatly!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It is supremely important that students be able to clearly articulate their specific needs.  The more specific the need, the easier it will be for the tutor/teacher to help them.  For example, "I need help on history."  That is pretty broad, and as a tutor I would have to do a fair amount of work to narrow down what the student really needed.  On the other hand, if the student were to say: "I am taking a class on US History, and I need help remembering dates and names." That would aid the tutor/teacher greatly.  Together, the student and teacher could employ strategies that help the student know information and retain it in a helpful way.

Also, if the student has specific goals, that would help the tutor know how to structure the plan.  For example, "I want to improve my writing test scores."  I, as a tutor, would ask when the next test is, and then lay out a plan to help the student work on writing technique and plan for the test's requirements.

I charge 40 dollars per session (40-50 minutes depending on subject matter and needs).  After assessment, depending on the plan I think is best for students, we will lay out a plan of how many times we need to meet.

Once the plan is in place, payment for the sessions can be arranged monthly.  For example, if we arranged for four sessions, one a week for a month, then payment for that month is due up front.
