About Alice
I am a highly experienced English, History, Politics, Drama and 11plus tutor based in Chelsea, London and online. I have had regular students of all ages for the last ten years - ranging from ages 5 to 45!
I am a writer and have a particular love of creative writing- running specific classes devoted to characterisation, setting and story development for all ages.
Another special focus is essay writing- I believe that proper structuring, analysis and writing techniques will aid all study, no matter the subject. I have a proven track record in quickly improving grades and restoring confidence! I also have been nicknamed the 'Revision Doctor' for helping my students revise efficiently and properly.
I have a Double First-Class degree in English Literature from Trinity College, Dublin and a Minor in English and Drama from the University of California, Berkeley. I am also a professional actress and spent two years training at the Bristol Old Vic Theater School. At GCSE I was in the top-ten UK candidates for Politics and History, I was the Senior Drama Scholar at Woldingham School and won an Exhibition Award to study at Trinity College.
As an 11 plus tutor, my students have gained places at Wycombe Abbey, Eton, Harrow, St Pauls and Woldingham in the last few years. I know the currciculum inside out!

I work in a bespoke way- changing my teaching style to suit individual students and their preferred leaning style. I have a proven track record of really improving grades but more importantly, to me, I restore confidence and passion for the subject, which hopefully stands them all in great stead for the future. I work a lot with high functioning autistic young women and also dyslexic children. I have also had students from ages 5 to 50!

Alice is brilliant. Our 10 year old son William really looks forward to, and thoroughly enjoys, his lessons with her. He especially likes that she is “funny” and “always happy”. His creative writing and comprehension has really improved and he’s getting great feedback from his teachers.

Alice tutored my son Zack through his English GCSE. She managed to connect with Zack developing his interest in the subject and improving his grade from a C to an A. Alice’s ability to impart her knowledge and exam techniques in a professional yet warm and engaging manor is very impressive. Her enthusiasm for the subject really seemed to rub off on Zack. Alice has a very positive attitude she is able to recognise a student’s potential as well as weaknesses and uses her lessons not only to impart knowledge but to build self-confidence.
I have no hesitation in recommending Alice as a tutor.Alice McCarthy tutored my daughter (another Alice!) in English last year for her A Levels. Aside from being charming and a great tutor in terms of academia she also boosted Alice's confidence. Her grades also went from a predicted D/C to a very high B.
