About Michael
I have a great deal of experience tutoring students at all levels, and as a result I'm very personable and can make students of all levels comfortable. I also have experience in unique areas of study like Latin and Philosophy. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from NYU in 2020 with a GPA of 3.8 after making the dean's list every year, so I have the skills to succeed academically. I'm excited to share my knowledge and skills with others.
I've mostly had experience with younger students, and it's incredibly rewarding to see a student of a young age develop study skills that will benefit them as they grow older. With older students, I both enjoy revisiting subjects with which I am familiar, and I love to learn new things alongside my students.
I began tutoring during high school as part of a community service program, and soon after that began freelancing in New York. I started with a number of clients working mostly on writing for younger students, later tutoring in Latin as well. I stepped away from tutoring for a few years in order to complete my degree, but I'm excited to resume now!
I was raised here in New York where I attended the Dalton School from a young age until graduating in 2015. I then took a year off, during which time I wrote for numerous publications and began tutoring. I next attended NYU from 2016 to 2020, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.8 and on the Dean's List each year. I majored in Philosophy, a highly competitive program at NYU in which I enrolled in graduate courses, and Dramatic Literature, in which I had a GPA of 4.0.
While at NYU I have pursued my passion, playwriting. I received an award for Outstanding Writing from the Planet Connections Festival for my play "Umbilical" which premiered in 2018, and have attended writer's programs and residencies in Italy, France, Serbia, and New York. I love to bring my love of theater and creative writing into my work with students!

My first step is always to take time to find out where the student is in the first place. I don't believe that I can teach anyone without first knowing them, so this step is important. Depending on what their hurdles are, I move forward in a few different ways. If motivation is an issue, I figure out a rewards system that help the student feel good about accomplishing small ssteps. If memory or recall are issues, I try to suggest mnemonics and other devices. In essence, I try to tailor my methods of teaching to each individual.
I've worked with students of many ages, from perhaps 6 or 7 at the lower end to older than me on the other end. Some students have been passionate about the subjects we worked on, some have hated studying! My tutoring process works well for all ages, in part because my process adapts to the student's needs.
Look for fit, not just for numbers, degrees, and qualifications. I've had very highly qualified teachers who just weren't a fit for me, and some teachers with far less experience who nonetheless clicked with me much better, and shared a great deal of knowledge with me.
The second meeting I had with a recent Latin student, she told me that my mnemonics and other memory devices worked well and helped her on her test. I felt really satisfied by the feeling that my work had had an impact on her work!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think holistically - take everything into consideration. What's happening in the rest of my life? Where are my priorities with this subject? What blocks can I get rid of (like bad recall) and which can't I get rid of (not enjoying a subject)? Am I sure that these are needs, and not wants?
