About Jade
(Please contact me through my cell phone for sessions) Collaborating with my students as a peer instead of an academic authority figure, is what really separates my tutoring sessions apart from others. In these sessions collaboration is key because it allows the student to expand on new ideas for their paper by answering and analyzing open-ended questions about their work; this allows the writer to keep their authentic voice throughout their paper.
I began teaching during my undergraduate career while working at the university newspaper, Daily Titan. I began tutoring initially to better my own writing, however, as I began to work with kids I discovered that this was the passion I truly wanted to pursue.
I have a Bachelors in Humanities and Social Sciences as well as a minor degree in print journalism. I am also a candidate to receive my master's in literature. Within my master courses I am working within the writing center that also serves as a tutoring center for undergraduate students. I have worked as a tutor for about 4 years and I am currently working as a Support/Co-Teacher for grades 5-8 in English and history.

When meeting a new writer, I tend to start a casual conversation about how the writer themselves feels about the piece they are working on and its purpose. From there, we read the work together out loud and carefully go over each paragraph for grammatical and structural error as well as analyze its function and relevance throughout the entire piece.
I have mostly worked with inner city students within Los Angeles county and Orange county. I alo have experience tutoring students who require IEPs (Individual Education Plans). In working with these students I served as an interventionist, helping them close the gap between their current academic level and the grade level they should be performing at.
I am very fond of a reading event called Wellreadblackgirl. It highlights all these different forms of literature written by black female authors and allows a space for black creative writers to have a shared experience over different pieces of literature at the event.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The content of a subject is hard for some students to grasp because everyone has different ways of learning. Due to this fact, sometimes students don't know what to ask because they don't know what they need...and that's OK! I welcome all the learners who may know exactly what they need as well as those who have no clue what's going on. My tutoring methods are all about collaborative work which will help students to learn what questions they need to ask themselves personally as writers as well as what ways they can improve their writing.
