About Felicia

I have been a high school English teacher for 7 years, and have been teaching first year composition classes at the college level for 9 years. I have a Master's Degree in English Composition.

Writing and teaching have always been my passion, and my students frequently tell me that I teach concepts in a way that is clear and easy to understand.

I believe one of the best ways to get better at writing is to get professional feedback on writing, and I pride myself on giving extensive feedback.

I am patient, and I love what I do.

I love teaching and tutoring because of the relationships I build with my students. Writing is a very personal thing, even if a student is just writing a research essay. It's important for a student to trust their teacher or tutor, and I am good at putting people at ease and helping them improve in a non-judgemental way.

As an educator I am also a life-long learner and I love learning about how to do my job better, I love learning about topics students are interested in and might write about, and I love getting to know students.

I began my work in education as an English tutor at my university's writing center, then taught classes as a graduate students. I planned on going on to get a Ph.D in English, but decided to take a break after graduating with my Master's and took a position teaching high school. I found that to be my calling and have worked in education ever since.

I have a B.A. in History and an M.A. in English Composition. I have been teaching and/or tutoring in some capacity for over 10 years. I first worked at the Writing Center at Purdue Northwest as an english tutor. I continued to tutor for years, while also working as a teaching assistant. In graduate school, I taught First Year Composition classes independently and have been teaching high school English for 7 years. I have been teaching university-level writing classes occasionally since I was in graduate school.

Therefore I am able to teach concepts of literature and literary analysis, research essays, college application essays, and more.

My typical process for working with a new student is to first get to know them a little bit. I might ask them how they feel about the subject in general, what ways they prefer to learn, etc.

Then, once I understand what the student's need is, I will explain a little bit about my process, which varies depending upon the student's need. In my time as a teacher and college instructor, I have a litany of resources which I have created to help teach concepts. I will usually use some of those resources to help either explain concepts or as examples. I also like to provide examples where applicable, because one of the best ways to learn is by seeing good examples.

If I am helping a student with a piece of writing, I will read the piece and maybe ask some questions as I read. Then, whether in person or online, I will give feedback in the form of comments and keep an open dialogue with the student to make sure my feedback is easy to understand.

One of the most basic teaching techniques is the "I do, We do, You do" model. I demonstrate a concept or activity, then work with students to help them with an example, then have the students do it on their own under my supervision, giving help when needed. I scale down this concept in one-on-one tutoring and it creates an effective learning opportunity.

I have worked with a very wide variety of students. Teenagers, traditional college students, non-traditional (adult) college students. I have worked with students in poverty and many, many students who are English language learners. I have worked with different groups of international students. I have taught a college class specialized to a program for Chinese exchange students.

I think experience is one of the most important elements of a good english teacher or tutor. Some skills, like giving helpful feedback on writing, is one that is only strengthened with experience. I have given feedback on thousands of essays at this point in my life, and so I'm very familiar with common mistakes and how to teach students to fix them.

It's also a good idea to find someone who is friendly and personable. Many people are understandably uncomfortable with sharing their writing, especially with a stranger. You want someone who will respect your writing and you as a person.

My school district is currently doing fully virtual classes, which is hard on almost everyone. The world is a very stressful place right now, and my students are feeling the pressure.

I believe writing is an incredibly powerful tool for self-care, so I periodically have students write journal entries as an assignment. My students often express gratitude for these assignments, because they might otherwise not get some stress off of their chest.

For one journal assignment, one of my students mentioned a story idea she had, and I told her that I thought it was a good idea and encouraged her to write it. I gave her a lot of feedback over the next few weeks as she wrote it and she now says it's the work she's most proud of, and is looking into avenues for publication.

I like this event because it shows how powerful an idea can be if you give it enough attention and have someone to help you.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Tutors and teachers are able to provide the most help when the student has a good idea about what they need.

I always tell my students that before they ask questions about assignments, read through the instructions very carefully. That way, they'll know what's already answered in the instructions and have a better idea of what they do and do not understand.

Students should also think about their academic strengths and weakeness in any subject because that can help teachers draw on those strengths to help the student grasp concepts.
