About Matthew
A fascination with writing drives my work. I have had extensive training in the art of research and composition as a PhD candidate in English at the University of Chicago. My three years of teaching experience have mostly been spent with undergraduates, but I welcome students at all ages and skill levels. Whatever your goals may be, I am confident we can work together to improve your writing.
My first experiences teaching were as a Course Assistant for a Shakespeare class at the University of Chicago. It was my responsibility to lead discussion sections after the lectures of each week. I have worked as a Course Assistant for three classes since then. I also taught my own standalone class in the fall of 2017 and completed training for the University's Writing Program this past spring. I will begin teaching for the Writing Program this fall.
I received a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of North Carolina in 2013. Since then I've been working on my PhD in English at the University of Chicago. I am currently at work on the third chapter of my dissertation.

Usually my process begins by gauging my students' concerns and the practical scope of their needs. Do they need help with a specific project or a particular genre of writing? Are they aware of any recurring issues or points of confusion? What techniques will they need to practice in order to address the challenges of their subject?
Assuming the student has a specific project in mind, I work with them closely on a text they've already composed or give them a prompt to assess their skills and needs. If they want to improve their proficiency on a more general level, I give them a series of exercises to zero in on various areas of concern.
