About Kaitlin
As a certified English and Special Education teacher, I have experience with a variety of educational settings and curricula, including charter schools, public schools, and private schools. I have taught grades 2-12, beginning as a 2nd grade reading and math interventionist at a charter school in New Orleans, transitioning to teaching middle school English in New York City as I pursued my Master’s Degree in Education, and then moving up to teach high school English, grades 9 -12 as a lead English teacher, writing intensive teacher, and interventionist.
I am most passionate about grammar and creative writing, and have built a reputation on my thorough feedback on students’ papers and creative writing assignments that truly allow for student creativity and expression. I believe strongly in the transformative power of reading and I have witnessed the incredible growth students make when they discover for themselves the joy of reading. I am an avid reader myself and enjoy staying in tune with new child and young adult fiction (as YA literature is experiencing quite a renaissance at the moment). I have been tutoring since I was in middle school, starting with family members and friends of the family, and then volunteering steadily at various community organizations throughout high school and college. These various environments has taught me a great deal about how every child learns differently and I have gathered many tools for meeting individual students where they are.
I currently hold a certificate to teach secondary (7-12) English, as well a certificate to teach students with special needs. I also have extensive experience teaching English Language Learners, or students whose first language is not English.
I get so much joy from witnessing young people become more confident and curious. My teaching career has been fueled by students feeling empowered to master a new concept and work through a difficult problem. I also love working with students who have been struggling, especially in getting them to change their mindset around learning and their own potential. Working with young people keeps me humble as I am constantly learning as much from them, such as new approaches and different ways to present information or make it accessible and relevant, as I work to ensure that they are learning from me. I also pride myself on working with the whole child, academically and emotionally, and encouraging students to accept help and advocate for themselves, whether that’s to ask for more help or more challenging work. Witnessing the joy and pride that comes from students learning to read or comprehend on a deeper level is what brings me joy and satisfaction. Finally, there’s no feeling more exciting and promising than when a young person discovers that they love to read!
I knew I wanted to be a teacher from a very young age. I began tutoring family members and friends of the family while I was still a middle schooler myself. During high school and college I volunteered regularly as a tutor and mentor at various community organizations around the city. After graduating with my Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from UIC, I volunteered for two years with an Americorps program called City Year, through which I volunteered full-time in schools as a reading and math interventionist. From there I moved to New York City to pursue my Master's in Teaching at Brooklyn College. I taught grades 7-12 while in New York City. I have since transitioned into more free lance work as a tutor and mentor, taking on private clients as I pursue additonal teacher training.
I hold a professional certification to teach English and students with disabilities at the secondary level, grades 7-12, granted through New York State which has some of the most rigorous requirements for certification in the country. I also have experience teaching students grade 2-12, and many years of experiencing tutoring and mentoring students of all ages, from 0-17. I have attended many hours of professional training during my tenure in New York City, from the use of evidence-based writing strategies, to the incorporation of art to aid reading comprehension and self expression.

I beging by getting to know the student, their interests, their strengths and weaknesses, accoridng to them, and how they like to receive praise or feedback (verbally, written, fist bump, note, etc.). Then, I like to do a sort of assessment of my own, something based on academic standards at their grade level, yet short and simple, in order to get a better sense of where they are excelling and/or struggling. Next, we will usually jump into any work they have from school or a program they are using online. I also have suggestions for learning programs we can use to practice skills.
I have worked with an incredible variety of gifted young people. I have worked with public and private school students in Chicago, charter school students in the unique and expressive city of New Orleans, and many immigrant, first generation, and New York native students during my six years at public schools in New York City. Many of the students I have worked with have been years behind academically, with low reading levels and many behavioral issues. I have worked very hard to encourage students to not give up on themselves and their education. I have found that taking a genuine interest in the student, the child, in front of me, has paid off tremendously in getting them to put in the effort and hardwork.
Make sure they are good at listening and relatable. You want someone who will truly listen to who you are, what you like, how you learn best, and where you are struggling. You also want to work with someone who you may enjoy getting to know and who will be interested in learning about the new things you're into. Finally, someone with exprience will have more tools and techniques for helping you learn.
I was very fortunate to be able to "loop" with a great group of students at my previous school in New York City. I taught these students in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade English classes, and many of them also took my Theater elective class and my Intensive Writing course. Recently, as these students have begun to get ready for graduation, I have been receiving thank you emails from them, expressing how excited they are to continue their education in college and how they feel better prepared having had my help as a teacher. It is so rewarding to hear from students that they appreciate and recognize all the work you put into planning lessons, trying to meet their individual needs, and providing helpful feedback on their writing.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
First, students should do a self assessment, such as simply noting what they feel are their strengths in that subject area, and what they feel are their weaknesses or uncertainties. They can use a course syllabus that lists the various topics covered if they need help remembering what they've been learning so far. Once they have a feel for thir own strengths and weaknesses, they should ask themselves what has helped them learn -- this could be a way the teacher explained a particular concept, being able to work with other classmates, pictures, audio, etc. They may also want to note ways that information has been presented that has felt unhelpful, overwhelming, or unclear. With a basic understanding of where they stand and what they need help with, students and teachers can jump in and get to work more effectively. One last note--sometimes students will feel so overwhelmed that this self inventory seems to generate a list of nothing but confusion, and in that scenario, it is totally okay to approach a teacher or tutor and simply state that you feel lost and need help figuring out where you got lost. Teachers are there to help.
