About Betsy
Betsy has an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts: Humanities and Social Sciences. She began tutoring for the SUNY Adirondack Center for Reading and Writing Spring 2018 while she was attending school. She graduated with her degree in May of 2019 and would love to continue her tutoring as it is a great strength of hers and she enjoys it very much.
She specializes in students who are learning English as a second language (ESL students), reading and writing, students on the autism spectrum, essays on the college level, proofreading, editing, etc.
Betsy received an award for “Excellence in Tutoring” from SUNY Adirondack in April 2019. She was offered a job as a professional tutor at the SUNY writing center upon her graduation from but was unable to take the job due to her move to Bethel, VT.
It’s fun and rewarding. I love helping people.

I went through a 15 week college course on Tutor Theory and Pedogogy. It was directly related to “how to tutor properly”. All tutors at SUNY Adirondack must first take this course, before they’re even considered for the job (if they’re students).

I always begin by making sure I find out exactly what we are striving to accomplish in a session. I also like to make the student feel comfortable with me by asking them some questions about themself throughout the session, this also helps unlock their thinking because, by looking into themselves for answers about their own background, they are able to find answers about what they want to write about as well.
ESL Students (English as a second language), students on the autism spectrum, college students, and high school students.
Although I only have an associates degree, and you could probably find a real teacher with a BA or higher, I was thoroughly trained while in college to do exactly what you want: tutoring. I was taught how to tutor properly whereas many actual teachers are never taught the art of pedogogy. I am also able to use my age to my advantage because being young and open to new ideas, I am able to try new things and play with new ways of teaching. My age is also an advantage to working with people close to my age because most people in high school or college, especially, are able to relate better to people near to their age. This helps them feel more comfortable and focused on their work without feeling the pressure of a teacher or professor looking over their shoulder.

$14/hour, if the sessions go overtime by more than 10 minutes, which rarely happens, then an extra fee of a few dollars would apply.
If a student would like only half an hour, it would cost $7.
If a session doesn’t last the full time, the cost stands as you have me for a full hour of half hour so if there are any other things you need, I will gladly make up that full time with any other work you may have!
