About Derek
I've studied everything from creative writing to data science, and I use that breadth of experience to bring multiple ways of learning into the classroom. I focus on teaching for conceptual understanding, not just rote memorization. I make sure my students don't just pass their classes, but fully master the subject.
I love being a part of the learning process for someone else - helping people understand more of the world around us is my great joy. Out of all the years I've been tutoring, my fondest memories are the little "aha" moments when a student finally feels confident with a tricky new concept, or intuits a connection without me explaining it. Watching my students succeed always brings a smile to my face.
I began teaching with my younger brother when I was 11, training him in arithmetic and reading, and helping him get ahead in his classes at school.
I am a graduate student at Emory University. I have a TEFL certificate which includes formal training in education. I have several years experience tutoring students from 1st grade up through some college classes.

We start with a review of the student's materials and syllabus if available, then we explore how much knowledge the student has already, and what are their strengths and weaknesses. I always try to find out as much as I can about the student so I can provide help in the places they need it the most.
I work mainly with high school students but I'm comfortable teaching at all levels. I do not have any training in teaching students with special needs.
