About Gabrielle
I’ve been wrong more than I’ve been right regarding my career choices. The call to teaching has always existed and only strengthened, now I look to listen to it.
At 12 I volunteered as a tutor with Hamara School, a school for children of migrant labourers. I helped students with memorising theory using mnemonics. This is where I fell in love with teaching. But after standing first in Goa for A Levels, it only seemed fitting to study Economics at St Xavier’s College- Mumbai. I was wrong.
Through University, I volunteered with the Xavier’s Research Centre for the Visually Challenged-Mumbai (XRCVC) where I was trained to offer peer teaching to our visually challenged classmates. We used adaptable approaches to make content accessible. For example to teach graphs we had magnetic boards with different textured strings for our classmates to pass their hands over to understand the diagrams. I was able to help 10 students understand concepts that were difficult for them to grasp in a regular classroom. Before this training I didn’t think any of this would be possible, I was wrong.
After University, I moved to London and found a Financial Analyst job at Thomson Reuters Foundation. I felt fulfilled, but I knew I could do more. I applied to Teach for India Fellowship(TFI). I was overjoyed to be in the 7% to be accepted. I kept reiterating if I could make one child’s future brighter that’s great, I was wrong.
My first training class was an English lesson. I hand-picked the poem “I am Enough” hoping to inspire. I was wrong. These 10year olds couldn’t read words with more than two syllables. We ended up acting the poem out together, completely diverting from my elaborate lesson plan.
I was placed in 8th Grade Class in Daudbaug Slum in Mumbai for a year. This class had strong usage of drugs and alcohol and low reading comprehension levels. My students faced experiences in their 13 years that I could never imagine, but there’s hope. I saw hope when I had lesson plans that pushed for peer learning. When I mind-mapped ideas with the class for writing topics like- Feminism, Secularism and My Dreams. When I had class debate on Government Policies. When I got my class to act out plays for Civics lessons on Rights & Duties. In the stories that my students wrote when I asked them to re-write an event from History with an ending that they’d like.
I’ve learnt that adaptability, relatability, creativity, and planning are important for a teacher but what children need most is love and empathy. I learnt this when I sat and had conversations with every child and heard their story to understand them better. All 52 kids needed to be loved differently, Muskan the daughter of an abusive father needed to be allowed to break the dress code and wear a jacket, Krish the son of a sex worker needed to be heard, Ali the oldest of ten children needed to be praised, Ahad who sold tea at the train station through the night needed to be allowed to sleep during recess.
I am currently pursing my PGCE at UCL IOE which is the number one in the world for education. I am also working with a 6th grader who has dyslexia and anxiety, who needs to be coached for SATS. Right now, I can confidently say I nothing has ever felt more right in my life!
