About Christopher
Currently, I teach online part time for three universities. For two of them I teach asynchronous courses. For the third I teach real-time-remote courses. When I started teaching exclusively online in 2010, all my courses were asynchronous. In 2020, one school transitioned all classes to real time remote format. In addition to the asynchronous content, I now deliver live, web-based, lectures that are recorded. Students have the option of attending the lectures live or watching the videos. Or both. Teaching these real-time-remote courses has been very enjoyable. Interacting with students, answering their questions, seeing their facial expressions as they learn during live classes, provides for engagement not available with asynchronous classes. These past few years of live teaching have been very enjoyable, re-invigorating my passion for teaching in-person classes again. The next logical step is to work more closely with individual students. Given my experience teaching remotely, and flexible schedule, I believe I have the right combination of knowledge, skills and abilities to foster passion for learning in students seeking knowledge here at SuperProf.

Teaching Philosophy
As my career in academia evolved over the years, so did my teaching philosophy. Though, one constant is that I teach because I enjoy learning with others. This is directly related to the reason I became involved in teaching in the first place. One of my undergraduate professors inspired me. Dr. Ira Fischler, was initially my cognition teacher at the University of Florida. Over time, he became my advisor and senior thesis mentor. I really enjoyed the way Dr. Fischler taught. He was very active, full of excitement, interest, and passion. I was so impressed that I volunteered to do research in his lab. I also took several more classes with him, developed a senior thesis under his direction and graduated with high honors – I was hooked on psychology and teaching.
It is with this passion and interest with which I teach my courses. Asking and answering interesting questions about human behavior and learning is very enjoyable to me. Helping others learn about psychology is even better. Knowing that others are having fun with learning is the best part!
I initially brought my passion and interest to my face-to-face classes, and now that I am teaching exclusively distance education classes, I strive to communicate my passion and interest online. Some of my best students and greatest successes helping others enjoy learning about psychology have been in my online classes. A great tool for doing so is the discussion forum assignments within my online classes. Replying directly to students within the forums and making real world connections between the topics and their experiences, helps foster a sense of involvement in the class, and better yet, helps students understand how introductory psychology can help them in life. Recently, one school for which I teach implemented hybrid courses involving both synchronous and asynchronous portions. These courses are great! Being able to interact with students in real time is an added benefit. The live sessions are also recorded so asynchronous students can benefit from the live course dynamics.
Another interest of mine is to understand why different people learn differently. There are a wide range of learning techniques and styles for the wide range of students. These learning style preferences can usually be linked to basic cognitive and perceptual processes. So, I work to incorporate pictorial, orthographic, auditory and motoric (POAM) learning opportunities into my teachings.
All of this has led to my current philosophy of trying to enhance students’ learning using brain-based learning style techniques. By relating course topics to real life experiences, and through application of course material, this can be accomplished on a course-by-course, and student-by-student, basis as needed. Underlying this approach is my view that learning is a lifelong process and that all experiences can be learning experiences. Given learning is a lifelong process that goes both ways, I also learn a lot from working with a diverse group of students in my online classes!
