About Freddy
I am an experienced NYC-based creative writing teacher who specializes in teaching children grades two through eight, but I truly have a knack for teaching EVERYONE! I currently teach creative writing with Uptown Stories and essay writing and literacy with ESPI: City Smart Scholars. ESPI is a program designed to help high-achieving Bronx students prepare for the competitive Hunter College High School program.
I have been a comedy writer and performer since 2010 starting in the improv community in Chicago. After that I worked in production at DreamWorksTV and wrote 30 comedy scripts for their YouTube channel. While in LA I created my own production collective that produced over 20 videos, including two TV pilots. I have acted as a guest star on "Dead Ringers" alongside Rachel Weisz. Since being in NYC, I have focused on writing plays and returning to my love of TV/Film writing, in addition to developing a new love of poetry. The written word is my grounding place and can be yours too.

I can help you or if you're a parent, your child, learn how to write personal essays that will help them in applications. My approach is nurturing and intentionally casual, but with a designed lesson plan. I want the student to be as relaxed as possible, so that we can delve in and pinpoint what parts of ourselves are wanting to be expressed.
I believe that we can find ourselves in any prompt, be it "elephants in my bedroom," "bananas should be outlawed," or "the essence of life." By approaching a task from the side, we are able to find the joy in it and, thus, our confidence. Anyone can be a great writer, we just need to discover our confidence in it.
I bring the art of play to the serious matters of the world to specifically arm students with the tools necessary to navigate that world without losing a sense of self. I will challenge you to think INSIDE your box so that you can think outside the box of the modern world.
A typical lesson plan:
Warm-up by using a “side door” of a silly prompt to get us into writing. After that, I’ll provide a prompt of the day for the student to generate a list of possibilities/ideas in response to the prompt. We will select one and use that to expand on and play with for the rest of the session, which will include zooming in to the “why” of our response, playing with sensory details, and creating a simple structure for the overall essay. After that the student will begin their opening few sentences, then we will read and reflect! Optional homework, should we work together again, would be to write the essay for the following session.
