Hi I’m Sean I’m currently living in Glasgow in the west end area and have a year of tutoring experience and have had some in school teaching experience. I have an undergrad’s degree in physics which had 120 credits worth of mathematics built into the degree. Thus, I’m well-versed in both mathematics and physics and have previously helped multiple students achieve A’s in physics and mathematics up to advanced higher level. I previously was employed at Dublin Maths and have experience teaching to the Irish curriculum from early maths to Higher Level Leaving Cert. I have been teaching since 2022 and have taught 100’s of different students.

I can tailor my lessons to how you’d prefer, be it written or auditory. I can also focus on exam style questions or in-depth explanations on topics that need more study. In-depth will typically require more time for formative assess. Lessons can be done over Zoom/microsoft teams or in person if within a reasonable distance. I would aim to have lessons be between 1-2 hours; however, this can be less or more within reason. Furthermore, from experience, 2 lessons in one week typically lead to better retention and are recommended. Teaching mathematics and physics up to an advanced higher level. Plus certain areas of 1/2 year university level maths/physics (this would need to be discussed in advance).

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

    My interest in Mathematics and Physics really peaked from a young age when I was first introduced to astronomy in primary school. I’ve always enjoyed abstract problem-solving, but seeing how mathematical models directly describe physical reality—like using calculus to predict planetary motion or wave mechanics—was a complete revelation. That connection between pure logic and the physical world made me realize I wanted to dedicate my studies to this. My passion for education started later as something that I thought would be fun to try after graduation. After all, Maths and Physics often get a bad reputation for being 'too hard' or intimidating, and I noticed many of my peers were struggling simply because standard classroom teaching didn't match their learning style. So I thought why don't I have a go at trying something different. I began offering informal study sessions, taking complex, multi-step problems and breaking them down into intuitive, visual concepts. The moment a student shifts from 'I can't do this' to 'that actually makes sense' is incredibly satisfying. I stuck with private tutoring since I first gave it a go and I wouldn't dream of going back on that decision.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

    In Physics, my favorite topics to explore with students are Mechanics and Classical Dynamics. There is something deeply satisfying about helping a student take a real-world scenario—like a projectile in flight or colliding objects—and break it down into clean vector components and conservation laws. In Maths, I love teaching Calculus and Algebra. When a student finally sees how differentiation and integration aren't just arbitrary rules, but tools to measure rate of change and motion in physics, everything clicks. However, Quantum Phenomena can sometimes be trickier to enjoy teaching compared to Mechanics. Because you can't physically see or easily visualize a photon or wave-particle duality, students often feel overwhelmed by the abstraction. While it’s not as intuitively visual as classical physics, I use this challenge to teach students how to rely on mathematical models when their physical intuition reaches its limits.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

    My biggest role model was my Maths teacher in high school. Up until her class, I was often intimidated by complex, multi-step Maths problems because I thought getting stuck meant I wasn't 'naturally good' at the subject. She completely transformed my mindset by treating mistakes not as failures, but as valuable data. Whenever someone got stuck on a tough calculus or trigonometry problem, she wouldn't just hand over the answer. She’d walk through our thought process with us, pinpointing the exact line where our logic veered off course, and celebrate the parts we got right. She showed us that higher-level Maths isn't about getting things right on the first try—they're about resilience, debugging your logic, and refining your approach. That shift in perspective gave me immense confidence, not just in Maths, but when applying those principles to Physics mechanics as well. Today, as a tutor, I emulate her exact approach. I strive to create a safe space where students aren't afraid to make mistakes, helping them see that getting stuck is simply the first step toward genuinely understanding a problem
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    I think being a good tutor—especially in technical subjects like Maths and Physics—requires three key qualities: adaptability, empathy, and the ability to make abstract concepts intuitive. First, adaptability is critical because no two students process quantitative logic the same way. In Physics, one student might understand electromagnetic fields through visual diagrams, while another needs to break down the underlying mathematical equations line-by-line. A good tutor quickly diagnoses a student's learning style and adapts their explanation on the fly rather than just repeating the textbook definition. Second, you need deep empathy and patience. Maths and Physics carry a strong 'fear factor' for many students. When someone is stuck on calculus or mechanics, it’s rarely a lack of intelligence—it’s usually a gap in their foundational knowledge or a hit to their confidence. A good tutor creates an environment where making mistakes feels like a normal, productive part of problem-solving rather than a failure. Finally, a great tutor possesses conceptual translation skills. It’s not enough to know how to solve a complex problem yourself; you have to be able to bridge the gap between high-level theory and real-world intuition. Whether that's relating integration to calculating physical area or using roller coasters to explain energy conservation, turning dry formulas into concrete ideas is what leads to those genuine 'lightbulb' moments.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

    Back in S5 while studying for my Higher Maths, I remember finding logarithms and exponential functions incredibly unintuitive. I could follow the log laws on paper and solve the equations algebraically, but it felt like a set of arbitrary rules. I just couldn't visualize what a logarithm actually did in the real world. The breakthrough happened during a Physics lesson on exponential decay—specifically measuring radioactive half-life and light attenuation. Our teacher showed us a graph with a steep curve that was almost impossible to read accurately at low values. Then, they plotted the exact same experimental data on a semi-logarithmic scale. Instantly, that unmanageable curve turned into a perfectly straight line. Seeing that log scale in action blew my mind. I realized that logarithms aren't just an abstract algebra topic designed to trick you in Paper 1—they are a mathematical lens used to shrink massive ranges of real-world data down into something human-readable, whether it's radioactive decay in Physics, sound levels in decibels, or Richter scales. That realization changed how I revised for my SQA exams. Today, when I tutor Scottish students who are struggling with log laws or exponential equations, I don't just throw formulas at them. I show them why logs exist, turning a topic that often causes exam panic into one of their most confident areas.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

    A major challenge I struggled with when moving into higher-level Maths and Physics was 3D spatial visualization and translating complex word problems into clear mathematical setups. In topics like 3D vector geometry in Maths, or rotational dynamics and magnetic fields in Physics, problems rarely come neat and pre-drawn. You're handed a dense block of text describing a scenario—like forces acting at skewed angles or charged particles moving through perpendicular fields—and you have to construct the 3D model in your head before you can write down a single line of algebra. Early on, I found myself trying to jump straight into the equations, which led to incorrect vector components or misapplied right-hand rules. To tackle this, I forced myself to slow down and prioritize the pre-computation stage. I adopted a strict habit for every mechanics or geometry problem: drawing clear, oversized 2D projection diagrams from multiple angles (top-down and side views) and setting up an explicit coordinate system before writing any formulas. Overcoming that hurdle transformed how I approach both subjects. It proved to me that solving a tough Physics or Maths problem is 80% about laying down the right visual foundation and only 20% about doing the arithmetic. As a tutor, this experience is invaluable. When I see students staring blankly at a complex SQA word problem, I know they aren't lacking mathematical skill—they're just overwhelmed by the setup. I teach them the exact sketching and vector-breakdown techniques that helped me, turning intimidating scenarios into manageable step-by-step diagrams.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

    My core passion sits right at the intersection of Maths and Physics: it’s the thrill of demystifying the abstract and turning complex logic into intuitive, visual understanding. In Physics, what drives me is seeing how abstract equations govern real-world phenomena—like using calculus to model fluid dynamics or wave interference. In Maths, it’s the elegance of pure problem-solving and finding that clean, logical path through a messy algebraic proof. But what truly excites me about teaching is sharing that exact moment of clarity with someone else. Maths and Physics have a reputation for being cold, intimidating, or purely about memorizing formulas. My passion in tutoring is breaking down that barrier—taking a concept that feels impossible to a student, like 3D vectors or electromagnetic induction, and building a simple visual model or analogy that makes it instantly click. For me, teaching isn't separate from my love for Maths and Physics; it’s the ultimate test of it. If you truly master a subject, you can explain it to anyone—and seeing a student’s confidence transform from 'I can't do this' to genuine curiosity is the most rewarding part of what I do.

    Besides being able to talk about Maths and Physics without getting completely tongue-tied! What makes me a 'Superprof' is that I don't just teach formulas—I build mental models.
