About James
I’m James Cowland, an independent artist and art tutor in Hove, UK. I offer my experience in Art and Craft, in Drawing and Painting, in contextual practice and philosophical connection with creativity as a tutor, supporting your studies in Art on a 1:1 basis.
I cut my teeth as an Art instructor with Blind Veterans UK, instructing learners of all ages in Painting skills, Drawing, Woodworking, Mosaic, Ceramics - and a plethora of other crafts incorporative of visual impairment. From the outset, my approach has been incorporative of the specific needs and interests of my learners to promote a personal engagement with the subject - beyond simply skill sharing. I lead sessions with an emphasis on simplified but highly effective processes, confidence building and breaking down the stigma of perfectionism. Sessions are about connecting the learner with their own innate creative aptitude.. with an aim to set rolling their personal creative momentum, and remove the friction points that inhibit creativity from starting up again.
I studied Art and Design at Central Saint Martins before specialising in Fine Art at the University of Brighton. My intention was always to find meaningful work in creativity, and helping others. I’ve spent the last decade as a teaching professional, qualified with a Level 3 Education in Teaching and Learning (PTTLS) and experienced working with individuals with a wide spectrum of needs, alongside my other varied work as an independent Artist. My last enhanced DBS certificate was in 2022 courtesy of my then-employer.

Our initial lesson, a 1 hour remote consultation, will be an informal video call to meet, to get to know one another a little, and to ascertain that we are the right working fit. Throughout, we will discuss your Art, how you work now and what you would like to achieve, we will discuss your ideas, your needs as a creative, and set some goals and a time frame in which to meet them. I will always drop in as many nuggets of wisdom as I can, so even if we decide you'd rather take another route, I will have offered as much guidance as possible within that free first session.
When we decide we would like to proceed, we will lay out some goals and intentions, develop a strategy in the short-term and choose a time and setting for the next 'proper' session IRL or remotely. If we are lucky, time permitting, we can fit a little practical skill into that first session, but will almost certainly set a passive homework challenge to encourage momentum until our next session.
I find that 1 and a half hours per session provides adequate time to demonstrate, to troubleshoot, to work through and to answer questions without needing to cut short. If we are drawing or painting: we will draw and paint based on your surroundings, your interests, using your workspace. I can offer strong and well established core technical skills and deep-cut understanding. I can provide the essential drawing materials, and advise the most appropriate peripheral materials and where to get them. If we are preparing you and your portfolio for assessment, we can look for gaps in your folio, talk about your art until you feel confident to do so at interview. If we are confidence building, perfectionism-breaking, wellbeing and mindfulness seeking, we can use our session as an oasis of free-space for creativity to take charge.
