About Amanda
I'm a licensed educator in the state of Ohio with a Master's degree in Educational Studies and a Bachelor's degree in English, both from the University of Michigan.
My teaching methods are grounded in building trust and relationships—if students think their teacher "doesn't like them" or that they're "bad at reading/writing," then it's game over. Students need a teacher who is a cheerleader as well as a strong leader to push them to the next level.
If you're here for help getting your grades up, I got you—my students rarely (if ever) failed my class, and I've helped plenty of students go from "I usually get Ds and Fs in English" to "OMG I just got my first A in English!" Not to brag, but I got straight As in English, and it's kind of my speciality to help students meet big report card milestones.
If you're here for test prep, get ready—I scored a 32 in Reading and a 33 in English on my ACT, and I've taught ACT test prep to juniors who went on to beat the historical school average.
I retired from teaching two years ago to start a content writing business because, unlike some teachers, I'm actually good enough in my field of expertise to make a living out of it (no shade to the other teachers, I'm just saying—people pay me to write because I'm really good at it!)

Say goodbye to boring English lessons—I LOVE reading and writing, and I know how to spark that same passion in my students (hint: it's not through talking AT them or forcing them to read and write stuff they don't want to!)
My approach: I help my students fall in love with the subject so that they WANT to do the work. They will leave our sessions feeling confident and ready to impress their English teacher with all their new skills and knowledge. Heck, they might even be ready to teach the teacher a thing or two!
I'm relationship-driven, I love to make my students laugh, and I know how to meet students wherever they are. There's no cookie cutter lessons here. I've worked with students with learning disabilities, gifted students, and everyone in between, and every student requires a unique approach to the lesson at hand. Many of my lessons include choices so kids can pick learning styles that fit their preferences.
A typical lesson plan starts with a provocative question to get the noodle bubbling. If we're talking persuasive essays, I'll start with a real kid-firestarter like, "Do student athletes deserve to be paid if the school profits from their sports team?" Whichever side they pick, I'll pick the other side, and before you know it, your quiet, disengaged kiddo is debating their thesis, defending it with evidence, and responding to counterclaims before they even know what hit 'em. Sometimes these questions are just to help me get to know your student, other times they relate directly to the content.
Then, we'll get into the "meat" of the lesson. If we're doing test prep, we'll learn a quick skill and play some games to practice before we get into serious drills. If we're working on an assigned book, we'll popcorn back and forth or pick characters and turn our reading sesh into a dramatic performance. If we're working on essays, we'll warm up with a fun prompt, sneak in a little grammar, make a checklist of what we need to accomplish on the big essay, and work it out sentence by sentence.
If your child needs scaffolds to get things done, I've got TONS. From super-scaffolds like didactic prompting (that's where I write an essay alongside your child) and sentence starters to word banks and chunking, there's no learning hurdle we can't clear.
Finally, the lesson will wrap up with a chance for students to show what they know. I'll do a quick assessment of their progress so I always have data on hand to inform our next lesson and give you metric-based updates along the way. We'll celebrate wins, set goals for next time, and mentally prepare to apply what we learned in the classroom.
