About Toby
I have just finished my A-levels in maths, history and English literature, and am preparing to join Durham University to study English literature at the start of next year. Last year, I was highly commended in Christ Church College's prestigious Tower Poetry Competition, and enjoy creative writing in all forms. So, I am able to prepare students for formal exams as well as augment their abilities in more recreational literary endeavours. I may not be the most experienced teacher, but I am extremely passionate about literature, and hope to inspire students with a love for the subject as well as provide them with the ability to pass exams.

My teaching method is centred on the active engagement of the pupil. When I approach a text with a student, I want to hear their initial responses, encouraging them to stretch their interpretive imagination to its limits. I then develop on their comments, bringing in contextual knowledge, both biographical and literary, and asking them questions about how their ideas might relate to the rest of the text.
When teaching the skill of essay writing, I want to tailor my methods to the pupil's specific needs. Reading an essay of theirs, I can then offer feedback, both specific and generalised, and ask them to implement my suggestions in their next piece of written work. Essay writing is unfortunately a skill that requires repetitive practice to improve, but I hope to make it enjoyable for the pupil, as they learn to articulate their complex thoughts in a vibrant and convincing manner.
