About Joshua
As mentioned previously, I was originally trained as a technical and creative writer at university. Since 2010, my role has been to tutor English language learners of all levels and identities.
My teaching philosophy is grounded in universal access, and my practice is fundamentally Socratic. This means I focus primarily on the student first to ascertain their background and goals, which guides my work with the student going forward.
I am comfortable tutoring anyone of any first language or background. The only limitation is that I will not do work *for* a student. Always, at every step, I see my job as guiding a student to learn and practice how to accomplish their goals.

I have taught, tutored, and advised at every level of English language skill since 2010. I have taught and tutored extremely basic English skills (ABCs, etc), all the way up to tutoring writing for PhD or Masters-level dissertations.
I am student-centered from the start of every session. Usually I begin by asking what the student would like to cover, and then provide practice, information, or walk through resources from there.
While originally trained as a technical writer, most of my experience is in higher education, 16+, to an extremely diverse student base. I have worked and taught at a US community college for most of my career.
I am confident I am able to help any student achieve their goals, no matter their class, national origin, first language education level, neurotype, or prior experiences. As long as a student is motivated, anyone can improve.
